The Lava in My Bones was written in a novel style for a novel. It uses surrealistic metaphor to describe a coming out story with all of its internal struggles with homophobia, both external and internal. The storyline is not a new one in this context. It involves the same issues that all coming out stories usually entail from his inchoate recognition of his own homosexuality and his own horror about it to struggles with a fundamentalist disapproving mother to the governmental and psychiatric spheres of disapproval.Sam is a geologist who is governed by scientific reason and is emotionally removed from his feeling states. This is described metaphorically by demonstrating his understanding of the world through the study of rocks. You can't get much more unfeeling than that. This use of elemental metaphors such as stone, earth, honey, etc. for emotions or absence thereof is intriguing for two or three chapters. Then, it begins to appear as if the author is stretching for ways to maintain the metaphorical surreal aura beyond its usefulness. The net effect is tedious reading searching to capture the plot. I found it difficult to get through the book and found nothing new or interesting about the story.It is my opinion that this style is better suited for poetry than prose. I could see how some beautiful thought provoking poetry might come out of it.

This imaginative novel is so passionately written and full of emotion. The writer eroticizes everything, including every element in the Earth in a convincing evocative way. The book has a very complex structure and storyline. I especially liked how the relationships of Sam don`t fall into cliché but are really about the issues surrounding intimacy, something we all have to deal with at some point in our lives. The main plot about Sue, the girl who sweats honey and has a love affair with bees just blew me away. An original novel for people who have imaginations.

Ms. Phillips- Fein regards the pre 1975 New York City {NYC} as the liberal beacon of light in the U.S.A. for providing a plethora of services for its citizens that from the mid 1960's it could no longer afford but nevertheless continued to provide and even increasing the funding for many of them.The impression one gets from her narrative is that somehow the city should have continued to provide them despite facing increased and persistent budget shortfalls from the mid 1960's to the near Chapter 11 bankruptcy of 1975 - 76 and the continued budget shortfalls {despite the eventual Federal Bailout} right thru 1981- 82. The sheer political folly, fiscal irresponsibility and willful ignorance of facts of Mayors Robert Wagner, John Lindsey and Abe Beame and their fiscal comptrollers Abe Beame {under Wagner and Lindsay} and Jay Goldin are dispassionately detailed. The picture presented of them is that of myopic career politicians absolutely refusing to face that the reality of major population loss {700,000 + overwhelmingly the middle class}, declining revenues {despite higher & higher taxes !} a massively increased short and long term debt load and worrying more about being reelected which made any fiscal retrenchment or the cutting of services essentially impossible for them to contemplate. AND YET her sympathy seems to lean towards these same irresponsible leaders who recklessly borrowed money, overstated revenue projections and used every fiscal gimmick under the sun not to cut services - a very strange viewpoint !!!Mayor Abraham Beame comes off particularly poorly - he is presented by the author as an intellectual lightweight {both as comptroller and Mayor !!} an inept, blinkered and tone deaf old man who is PETULANT and ANNOYED that by the spring of 1975 the budget numbers cannot be fudged or manipulated any more, the banks have realized this and refused to fund / rollover any new N.Y.C. short term debt and that a fiscal reckoning has finally hit the fan !! He truly believed then and later that somehow the subsequent deep budget cuts for services should have and could have been avoided but how that would have been accomplished is not clearly defined BECAUSE he simply refused to believe that throwing more money out of the window than was being taken in thru the door truly mattered and that someone would {and should have} rode to the rescue for NYC's fiscal woes.Governor Hugh Carey and the NYC Municipal Unions along with the formation of the Municiple Assistance Corporation {MAC} are the unsung hero's of NYC avoiding the disgrace of bankruptcy. Their forced cooperation however reluctant and ad- hoc saved the city from immeadiate Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1975-76 giving it the breathing room to survive to fight another day. President Gerald Ford was 100 % right in his assessment of the fiscal incompetence, reckless overspending and over borrowing by the NYC liberal political establishment BUT only a small town political hack like President Ford would have considered allowing the largest city in the U.S.A. to go bankrupt and not think that the ramifications of that bankruptcy would not be an economic and political world shaking event. Despite being technically right in his rigid economic and moral terms President Ford was clearly wrong in the bigger overall picture and he was roundly criticized at home and abroad for his stance and rightly so. But to his credit, he was a major catalyst in forcing NYC to adjust its thinking and its priorities in order to get the federal bailout money it so desperately needed. In my opinion this would never have happened had he just forked over the bucks with no questions asked ! That President Ford was in a tough spot with his own reelection issues cannot be disputed.NYC facing bankruptcy in 1975 is an early prime example of the "too big to fail" syndrome that we would subsequently see and feel in gigantic detail during the 2007-2009 financial meltdown. The author 's chapters on how ordinary New York City citizens fought against the closing of schools, hospitals and fire houses in individual neighborhoods are lovingly detailed but they are beside the point however inspiring their stories may be. By 1975 NYC was in a deep decline economically, spiritually and morally as the July 1977 power failure / blackout would clearly highlight as the blackout brought out the worst in its Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. The Wanton, Unashamed, Brazen Looting and Destruction of commercial stores within their own communities, many of them owned by their neighbors and friends was made much worse by the fact that subsequently a significant percentage of the NYC media, political establishment, religious leaders and the national media would find reasons to excuse and even justify this orgy of criminal behavior, rioting, arson, theft and destruction. These were "the chickens coming home to roost" for the post 1975 NYC liberal establishment to ponder and digest. In my opinion the author leans toward having far more empathy for the looters than for those who were robbed and burned out of their business's and jobs. That bone and muscle were cut along with with the fat from NYC budgets for all city services from June 1975 on cannot be denied nor can the pain that these cuts would cause but they CAN BE EXCUSED because in order to save the city from the disgrace and even worse service cuts that filing for Chapter 11 would have entailed - what would have been the alternatives given the political realities of that time ?Two additional books to read in on the policies and players that brought NYC to it's 1975 catastrophe are "The Ungovernable City" by Vincent Cannato - a devastating revelation of limosene liberal John Lindsay's disastrous tenure as the NYC "Fun City" Mayor from 1965-73 and "The Streets were Paved with Gold" by Ken Auletta - a contemporary 1970's look at the fiscal crisis that highlights the mindset and disastrous descision making of NYC elected officials and in it he chronicles one particular incident that in 2018 seems almost surreal. Mr. Auletta describes a scene where Mayor Beame and Comptroller Goldin are in an darkened office late at night with an Albanian bookkeeper wearing a green eye shade poring over a ledger giving them the numbers of the what the cities on hand cash and liabilities are AND this bookkeeper was the only person that had the institutional knowledge to tell the Mayor and Comptroller of the largest city in the U.S.A. with a budget of 10's of billions of dollars where they stood financially. What a stinging indictment this is of the haphazard, crude and slipshod manner on how the NYC municipal government was monitoring and maintaining its fiscal budget.This book is an informative and concise read with the authors presentation of the key players, power brokers, how the MAC came to be and would function, the individual personnel drama's, how Chapter 11 was avoided and how NYC was radically transformed by all this drama is presented via a entertaining and easy flowing narrative. I give this book 4 stars - Recommended.

Excellent read. For a somewhat technical subject matter, it is a nice, easy, quick read that uses the fiscal crisis to frame a larger discussion about the role of government in social issues. A great history but also thought provoking on the very current issue of underfunded public pensions.

The author makes a great characterization of the cultural, political and economic aspects that a fiscal crisis can have on a city. Kim Phillips-Fein is obviously a liberal ideologically, which can be felt on who she blames for the crisis, e.g. the bankers, elite etc.That said though, the book is excellent and an important contribution to the history and economics of public policy in the united states since the 1970s. Four stars.

This book cronichles the near bankruptcy of New York City in 1975. This doesn't sound like the kind of material that would keep somebody up late at night because they got so involved that they wanted to finish the chapter, and then the next chapter. That's what happened to me. What more can you ask of any book?

Excellent history of the budget crisis and 1970s era New York. Deeply referenced with an outstanding level of historical detail. Very effectively profiles the players who helped the city avert bankruptcy and their various backgrounds and philosophies. It’s a shame that Kim Phillips-Fein’s masterly Fear City hasn’t received the expansive recognition it so justly deserves. Here, she has followed up on her previous, astute economic account, Invisible Hands, with another painstakingly researched yet engagingly written book.Fear City ostensibly deals with NYC’s mid-1970’s fiscal crisis. Yet what makes it a notable work of history, is the author’s discerning analysis of the event and her lucid explanation of how it ultimately served as a model for the national austerity state that emerged from the crisis; one which has spread far beyond the confines of New York City (e.g., the impending, let-them-eat-cake tax cut for the wealthy, and a shredding of the social safety net that is likely to follow).As she eloquently notes in the book’s Epilogue, the sorry legacy of the crisis is that:"...the American economy…was remade…on completely different terms. The idea of using the state to remedy poverty and improve socialconditions has given way to the sense that doing so is simply too expensive…The inequality that characterizes our society today seems tobe accompanied by the constant sense that any hope for a better society, any notion of collective action, must be a pipe dream---irresponsible, impossible to afford.”We are all much poorer since the advent of austerity politics and resulting policy. Yet, readers of Fear City will be deeply enriched by Professor Phillips-Fein’s astute and absorbing narrative.

George & Bird move beyond hypothesis or anecdotal evidence by sharing findings from thousands of churches over several decades. Their conclusion rests in the development and releasing of lay leaders within the context of small groups.Interestingly enough, a book full of strategy begins with personal evaluation. This introspection paves the way for one to capture, or regain, a vision for one’s church by connecting with God and listening to those around you. By gaining this vision, one will quickly see that a style of solo caregiving is sure to stifle the health and growth of the church.During the following portion of the book, the central theme is reiterated, often debunking common myths that leaders believe as to why their church is not growing. The authors then make a very clear case, based upon biblical examples and their research, as to why the role of most pastors must change. They contend that too many pastors serve as the primary caregivers, and would be better served by shifting into a coaching mode, training and releasing church members to care for others within small groups.The final section is spent discussing the unique factors that churches face in breaking growth barriers of 200, 400, 800 and beyond. I’ve ordered 4 copies, 3 for gifts and 1 for me. It really is a great instruction manual .He doesn’t simple say, “Here are 10 steps to grow your church.” Instead, he lays out a philosophy of ministry. In short, overwatch and empower.And for us established church and replanter folks, he even gives us pointers on how to lead with the 4 different groups of people that make up your church (I.e. the founding members - the new people that come in under your ministry).How to Break Growth Barriers is very enlightening, helpful, and a truly a blessing for the leaders of the church.If you want to listen to an interview with the authors, see Carey Nieuwhof’s leadership podcast, episode #134.My only critique are the outdated graphics in the newly revised book.

This book is massively important for changing the paradigm of church leaders from solo caregiver to developer of lay leaders. Leading to frustration, limitation, and burnout, the solo caregiver model only goes so far. But this book stresses the value and importance of giving away ministry by training up others in their gifts and talents. Although the "how-to" title might cause us to roll our eyes (understandably so, with the plethora of click-bait "how-to" titles shouting for our attention) this content is incredible, helpful, and immensely spiritual/pastoral. Jesus said it was good for him to leave, because then he could send the Holy Spirit, who would live in every believer. Why then do we, as church leaders, try to do solo ministry when even Jesus didn't see it as the best, long-term strategy?

Carl F. George's classic volume on Church growth is considerably improved in this rewrite both in terms of its overall clarity and the breath of issues it covers. It remains a Must Read for anyone in pastoral ministry or, for that matter, in church leadership. Even if you struggle with the notion that churches should grow you will benefit from the analysis contained within as to why they die. Don't miss it!

Definitely worth reading. We had several questions that this book answers. We are a two-year-old church and figure we can follow this book and if for some strange reason we don't grow, then we can hire an expert to help us pinpoint our weaknesses. I like how he addresses growth barriers for new churches and established as well. Thank you for taking the time to write this book for the growth of the kingdom!

As a student of aerospace engineering, I took a class in orbital mechanics - a truly fascinating subject. Like many others at the time, I was exposed to "Fundamentals of Astrodynamics" by Bate et al. As far as I know, people thought it was the best text available. However, it is no match for Curtis' book. Comparing the two made me somewhat envious of today's student. Orbital Mechanics offers great clarity, great solved examples, and surprising depth, considering it is an undergraduate text. To me clarity is of the essence and, to me, nothing provides more clarity than worked out examples, in particular if they involve realistic scenarios. For instance, one of the examples of this nature provides a step-by-step approach to determine the orbit of an asteroid from two observations. A great book I recommend to anyone studying orbital mechanics.

My Astrodynamics class used the classic by Bate due to the very low cost. However, because the book we used was last updated a looooooong time ago (there were references to the Soviets everywhere...which just made me feel old...), this book made for an excellent companion. The included MATLAB codes, especially for the classic orbital elements, were outstanding, and the flow of the book mostly matched how my class progressed as well. Highly recommended.

I recently read the 2nd edition of this book. Though I am more advanced in my experience and knowledge of much of the material covered, I picked up this book for a great deal and thought it would be interesting to brush up on some basics in a few areas. I also always enjoy seeing the different approaches used by various authors when covering a particular topic within such a subject area. I must say that this is one of the best introductions to orbital mechanics and astrodynamics that I've ever come across.There are a few minor errors in the 2nd edition and the errata sheet is available at the publisher's website if you look for it. Again, they are few in number and very minor. I have read many very technical books from advanced dynamics to advanced radar theory and I can tell you it is rare to come across a text that has absolutely no errors, regardless of how many peers review the work prior to publication. In writing many technical works of my own in my career, including complex mathematical algorithms, having those works peer reviewed, as well as participating in the peer review of others' works, I have noticed a phenomenon at work that helps to ensure that at least some errors eventually make it through to publication. When you are intimately familiar with a subject, I believe the brain will occassionally read what is supposed to be on the page rather than what actually is. However, the few errors that are present (less than two pages, large type and large line spacing on the errata sheet) are more than overshadowed by the overall quality and content of the book.I urge you to ignore the personal attacks of one reviewer and consider the content and worthiness of the work. Also note that some of the prior reviews have nothing to do with the book itself or its content (e.g. complaints about delivery problems, getting the wrong version when purchasing the Kindle edition, etc). These affect the overall rating of the book even when they do not critique the work itself.The explanations provided by the author are very clear and concise. The ideal combination of content. It does expect you to know a little calculus to follow some of the derivations but that shouldn't be an obsticle to applying the knowledge of the end-results of the derivations.I am particularly pleased by the consistency in use of notation, something that I cannot say for many works on more advanced topics. Standard, widely-accepted vector, matrix and calculus notation is utilized and kept consistent within the text and between the text and the figures. I have authored many technical works in my career (published only within DoD programs) and have a deep understanding of the difficulty in expressing complex concepts in the form of graphical aids to support the discussion in the text. Especially without using color and shading to assist in properly depicting three-dimensional concepts. While the illustrations in this text aren't as complex as many I have had to produce, I was impressed by how well simple black-and-white line drawings and gray-shaded drawings were used in this work.The topics covered, and the examples presented, provide a rather comprehensive introduction to the subject matter.I urge you to use Amazon's "Look Inside" feature to review the table of contents. I found some of the example problems to be rather unique and interesting compared to typical examples encountered in other works.I'll admit that I skipped the sections on parabolic and hyperbolic orbits as they did not of particular interest to me.However, I have no problems recommending this text to anyone (with a little calculus background and a little physics background preferred) who need to obtain a good introduction to orbital mechanics/fundamental astrodynamics. This book will provide you with a solid foundation to continue studying more advanced subjects in space flight dynamics, satellite attitude determination/control, mission planning, tracking, re-entry dynamics, and more.In summary, a great introduction and worthy of the price.

The book itself has decent quality. However, in the Kindle version, all the equations are scanned images in low resolution. This combines with the blackboard bold font make it impossible to read pixilated equations.

Curtis deserves credit for managing to make the material described easy enough to swallow that you can basically jump into this material even cold turkey. The dialogue and derviations are easily followable, and theres enough of an intro on kinematics and a review of some of the basic geometry and algebra that you wont require a second textbook to translate the first.The problems arrise in the examples. While I appluad the majority of them, its readily apparent that they were performed by a assistant or a student, as theres just enough errors to radically confuse aynone trying to copy the problem to get an understanding of the process. And while the examples are plentuiful enough to be incredibly useful, they cover only the barest bones. I can understand not wanting to spend 1/3 of the book performing example problems, a few of the more complex subjects would've been greatly assistaed by just a handful of problems that involved more than just perfect universes with circular, coplanar orbits using point masses. And even the homework problems are no respite, as some of the chapters had a grand total of 8 problems, meaning at most 4 had in-book defined answers for personal study.Overall, for such a dry and complex subject matter, this book is extremely useful, but just 20-30 more pages of problems and exmaples would've been a termendous boon.

Good reference on orbital mechanics. Blends the mathematics with good examples and plenty of illustrative graphics. Has a few typos. Most of them are in references to equations with one number off. Best of the 5 references I have in my own library on the subject. Covers the topic all the way from Keppler physics to more modern algorithms. The downloaded Appendix D for the MATLAB scripts is quite comprehensive.

It gives one a whirlwind tour of world history, with a focus on Greece, Rome, and China. I say that there is a “focus” on those civilizations because, to be honest, the most detailed lectures in the series are about those three civilizations, although Prof. Aldrete does talk about virtually every major civilization in the ancient world. The first three lectures are devoted to ancient Mesopotamia. Lectures 4 and 5 talk about ancient Egypt. Lectures 6 and 7 deal with the Indus Valley Civilization of India. Lectures 8-11 deal with the early history of Ancient Greece, while lecture 10 compares and contrasts the Iliad and the Odyssey on the one hand, and the two great epic poems of India—the Ramayana (which tells the story of the Hindu god Rama and his attempt to save his wife, Sita, from the clutches of Ravana, the king of the rakshasas (a species of bloodsucking demon and their subsequent triumphant return to India and their coronation as king and queen of India).Lectures 10 and 11 deal with the beginnings of Ancient Greece. Lecture 13 compares and contrasts the teaching of Confucius with some of the Greek philosophers. Lecture 14 deals with Mystics, Buddhists and Zoroastrians. Lecture 15 deals with the various conflicts between the Persians and the Greeks, while lecture 16 is about Greek art and architecture, and lecture 17 is about Greek drama. Lecture 40 is about when the Roman Empire adopted Christianity, and lecture 41 discusses the rise of the Byzantine Empire. Lectures 43 and 44 talk about the Tang Dynasty of China.Oddly enough, Prof. Aldrete only devotes one lecture—lecture 45—to the rise of Islam. Lecture 46 discusses the rise of Christian monasticism, and lecture 47 discusses the life and work of Charlemagne, and lecture 48 sums up the course.The main reason why I give this course four stars instead of five is because Prof. Aldrete does not devote an equal amount of time to each culture, civilization, and time period he covers. For example, he devotes TWELVE lectures---25% of the course---to Ancient Greece, ELEVEN lectures to ancient China---24% of the course---and another twelve lectures---25% of the course---to Rome. By contrast, he only devotes THREE lectures to ancient Mesopotamia, THREE to ancient Egypt, and TWO to ancient India, and TWO to the civilizations of the Americas. He could have---and should have---devoted more than one lecture to the civilizations that were NOT Greco-Roman or Chinese. I mean, there is no unwritten law preventing him from doing more than 48 lectures. He should have devoted more lectures to a lot of these topics which he had covered. While all of the lectures were interesting, I just thought it was odd that he did not devote an equal number of lectures to each culture and civilization. Furthermore, From a historical perspective, Rama was a deified historical king, and was to have lived in the fourth century BCE, around the time of Alexander the Great) and the Mahabharata (another great epic poem whose events, as with the Ramayana, were thought to have been legendary for a very long time, but which, according to the historian Michael Wood, in his 2007 PBS documentary, “The Story of India,” was proven through archaeological evidence to have been historical. The Mahabharata tells the story of a great war between two sides of the same family for control of India. According to the Archaeologist who dated the artifacts found in the region of Hastinapur (just outside of Delhi), the pottery, weapons, and other artifacts date to the year 836 BCE, which was the year when the real battle is thought to have occurred. The evidence was discovered in 1949 by the archaeologist B.B. Lal, and it consisted of pottery, the actual dice used to play the dice game which both sides played to see who would win the throne of India, the weapons that were used, and the painted grayware which dated to the late tenth and early ninth century BCE. Surprisingly, Prof. Aldrete does not mention this. Indeed, when he talks about the events of the Mahabharata, he describes those events as "mythological." Contrast this with the Trojan War---for which there is VERY LITTLE evidence, but which Prof. Aldrete seems to portray as a historical event. Objectively, while the actual city of Troy certainly existed---its ruins are in present-day Turkey---there is no objective proof that there ever really was a Trojan War. Furthermore, with the possible exceptions of Agamemnon, Priam, and Priam's sons, none of the people talked about in either the Iliad or the Odyssey are thought to have ever existed, as far as we know. By contrast, the Battle of Kurukshetra really did happen and there really was a Dhritarashtra, a Gandhari, a Yudhishthira, a Bhima, a Nakula, a Sahadeva, a Karna, etc. They lived---and fought and ruled---in the late tenth and early ninth centuries BCE. Historically, Rama and Sita are thought to have lived in the fourth century BCE, and therefore would have been contemporaries of Alexander the Great. All in all, I would recommend this course, but as a historian and as a scholar of religion who specializes in Islam, I found it surprising and perplexing that he did not devote at least three or four more lectures to the early history of Islam. Furthermore, he should have devoted EQUAL numbers of lectures to each culture, civilization, and/or time period. Despite this one flaw, I would still recommend the course because it is very fascinating.

This is a solid introductory lecture on the history of the ancient world. The timeline skips around, but begins in 3100 BCE with Mesopotamia, the Near East, and Egypt. It's a total of about 4000 years of history being covered here, and as such, is not 100% comprehensive. Given the length of this audiobook, however, a lot of ground is covered. People can listen to the full thing, find out what seems most interesting to them, then go on to discover other audiobooks/books which cover more detail.My one complaint is that this audiobook lecture overemphasizes Greek/Roman history compared to other cultures. This is still a great listen with a lot of information. Nothing seems wasted and tangents are few. Personally I especially enjoyed the fact that this is a lecture, and doesn't sound like some guy reading off a script for a paycheck. It's personable and entertaining.

Prof Alderete's course is extremely ambitious in its intent. The calendar is glossy and come with a stand. It looks nice on my desk. The pose descriptions are thorough (step by step). They have Pose of the Week, Self Care Tip, Sanskrit Word of the Day, Meditation, Take It Off the Map, Prep Pose. Obviously some are better than others. First and foremost I wanted to learn the poses (names and sanskrit) which is 2 days out of the week. Worse is that those poses tend to repeat. Of all the yoga poses that exist, I'm surprised and disappointed that there isn't more varieties. (I'm assume the prep poses come back as poses or the week but that doesn't make me feel better.)

This one is much higher quality than the 2018 one- the pages are in full cover. We didn’t see any repeats from previous years. My mom loves it! Hopefully 2020’s calendar is equally perfect.

Calendar is okay, the poses repeat themselves frequently, and i expected yoga only not meditation.

Love looking at this daily and gaining new knowledge on the subject.
