Review

“A terrifying true story of life in North Korea…Told in simple prose, this is a shocking and devastating tale of a country’s utter contempt for its citizens.” —Kirkus Reviews“In his achingly straightforward memoir, Ishikawa vividly describes the horrendous conditions that the tyrannical and cultish state inflicts on its people…Ishikawa relates his painful story with sardonic humor and unwavering familial love even in the depths of despair, making human the often impersonal news coverage of mysterious and threatening North Korea.” —Booklist (starred review)“Like Kang Chol-hwan’s The Aquariums of Pyongyang (2001)—the book that spurred President George W. Bush’s commitment to helping the people of North Korea—Mr. Ishikawa’s…descriptions of North Korean poverty are chilling, as are his accounts of the corruption and repression that dominated every aspect of life there…searing, swiftly paced.” —Wall Street Journal“Masaji Ishikawa was born in Japan to a Korean father but repatriated as a boy to the supposed paradise of North Korea. Newly translated into English, this account of his life and appalling times should become a classic.” —South China Morning Post“We often turn to books to help us understand people, experiences, and worldviews different from our own. If you’re looking to further your education in 2018, pick up A River in Darkness: One Man’s Escape from North Korea. In his memoir, translated from Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa recounts his turbulent childhood and life under a totalitarian regime in North Korea. Yes, you’ll learn about the country’s politics, leaders, and economy. But more importantly, you’ll learn about the people who live there and what it’s like to be on the lower end of the social hierarchy.” —HelloGiggles“Compulsively readable and heart-wrenching, A River in Darkness reveals the daily cruelty of North Korea’s government to its poorest people. In this memoir, the victim is a young Japanese-born Korean who settles in the North with his parents, only to endure privation and abuse, as those he loves die of exhaustion, hunger, and loss of hope.” —Blaine Harden, New York Times bestselling author of Escape from Camp 14 and King of Spies: The Dark Reign of America’s Spymaster in Korea

HOW TO CHOOSE? I had to ask myself: Which selection offers me the most in-depth “feel” of a nation or a time in history, a family’s struggles and survival? What shows great courage in the midst of extreme hardship? What demands to be read NOW?To me, it is A RIVER IN DARKNESS. That metaphor is apt for the oppression faced by so many people in the last 40 years in North Korea. It deepens my understanding, sympathy and appreciation for freedom.A TOUGH MEMOIR. I’m sure it was not easy for the author, Masaji Ishikawa, to share his story with us. So much suffering, deprivation, and death from disease and starvation. So if you want a happy book, this is not it. It is a tough read, satisfying to my need to know and to share in the author’s life. But often I had to take a break from reading it in order to cope with the build-up of inner distress.STYLE—NOT FANCY BUT HONEST. “Truth is stranger than fiction.” If I read this as a novel, I would find much that's hard to believe. The hardest would be the loss of loved ones to starvation, loss of dignity, purpose, hope. But somehow the author clings to the hope of escape to freedom, to return to his homeland of Japan from which he was taken 39 years earlier.VIVID—I felt I was right there with Ishikawa, suffering and hoping with him, holding my breath as he tries to escape across the river to China. Always he faces the possibility of being sidetracked and captured even after he's in China. It's amazing how certain people come to his rescue, showing there is still good in the world.THE GREATEST RIGHT--STOLEN. Even though as a young man Ishikawa did well in a North Korean university, he was reduced to being a farmer; he was too educated for the repressive governing officials. I felt his sorrow when he stated: “I never could forgive Kim Il-sung for taking away our right to think.”Hopefully where you are, you have the right to express what you think. After reading this simple but disturbing book, I was left thinking far into the night. And this morning I'm so grateful for what I have in this land of freedom and much love.

Starvation (death) if he stayed where he was or risk of being captured/shot if he attempted escape! What would your choice be?Born to a Korean father and Japanese mother in Japan, Masaji's early childhood was sweet despite the family being poor. Alas, it was not to stay that way when his frequently drunken, abusive father came back on the scene. The beatings given to Masaji's mother got so bad that she had to literally run away to preserve her life. Masaji was left with his three younger sisters. Enter center stage the wicked stepmother for a period of time.Whilst this was going on in Japan, Kim Il-sung was enticing Korean citizens in Japan to come to the "promised land, the land of milk and honey". What was he promising? Jobs, housing, education and more! This book, as well as being someone's story, is also a history lesson. We learn why the Koreans were in Japan in the first place and what life was like for them there, especially after the end of WWII. North Korea had not even existed when Masaji's father had lived in the southern part, now South Korea, and yet now he was was believing what he was being told and looking forward to going. Masaji was never fooled by all the promises but had no choice but to go along with his father's wishes and yes, his mother had surprisingly returned home and eventually agreed to go with them. Repatriation began! You may be surprised to learn the numbers and also the length of time it continued. "So yes, the mass repatriation was great news for both governments, the perfect win-win situation for everyone except the real human beings involved."The year was 1960, Masaji was now 13 and his promised "fantastic" life in North Korea was about to begin! He played the role well hoping that somewhere along the line he would be able to move up the social/job ladder. Free education? Hmmm... University? Not a hope! Nothing this "Japanese bastard" could do about it. Faking your loyalty to Kim Il-sung meant life. Lack of food and supplies was part of daily life if you could even call it that. Eating stuff that gave you guts ache was sometimes the only way to physically survive.Falling in love? The family of his original love didn't want Masaji anywhere near their daughter because of the trouble he may bring them! You can read for yourselves the despairing trials of future loves, trying to raise children when there was not enough food etc. We read of how his mother, at 44, had only 8 teeth left. Did his parents live to enjoy old age? What about his sisters? Do you know the Kim Il-sung's Ten Commandments?Having read someone else's memoir of life in North Korea, I kind of knew what to expect when choosing this for my Kindle First choice. Even so, the realities of what happened are truly horrific. Yes, we know before starting the book that the author made it to safety by reading the Amazon listing but he spent 36 years surviving in that regime! If you are looking for a book with a happy ending this is not for you! If you are looking for a flowery, escape from reality type book this is definitely not for you! However if you want to read a true story where the raw pain can almost be felt, this is for you. Even on his escaping, you would think that once in China returning to Japan would be easy. Wrong! This book deserves to be read and the message spread abroad. It is well written and not overly long, moving on at a good pace. I downloaded this on to my Kindle. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

Glacier National Park is a spectacle. This book helped me to make the most of my one-week camping trip. But don't forget to check at the Ranger Station for local knowledge as well. I used the book for 6 hikes during my vacation.

If you are planning a trip Glacier National Park, this is a great book to review before you go. It provides great information on hikes in the park . Since it is a kindle book, I was able to take it with me on my tablet and read about things to do once we got to Glacier.

Nice comprehensive trail guide. The Wilderness Press books always deliver!

Very good reference book for Glacier National park.

Fantastic preview to hiking in Glacier National Park. I used it exclusively for my trip!

I highly recommend this book for any hikers heading to Glacier National Park. The detailed descriptions of where trail heads start and difficulties/features were extremely helpful.

Well organized, easy to read and find hikes by region. Slim and lightweight. Good stats on hikes. My one problem was that it was that many of the trails in the area link together, and this book merely highlights the best hikes without referencing the other trails you might come across and get confused by.

Lots of good information. Great help in planning hikes.

Amazon.com Review

Troubleshooting and Configuring the Windows NT/95 Registry offers practical solutions, tips, and warnings. Learn them and you'll be able to use the registry to control the Windows operating system, its security features, networking, installed 32-bit applications, device drivers, and users. This tutorial will help you understand the registry's structure and underlying concepts. While some of the information will be relevant for end users, this book is fundamentally geared toward systems administrators. The initial chapters provide a substantial introduction to the structure of the registry and teach you how to protect it, recover from failure, make changes to it using the Regedit32 editor, and even perform edits remotely. The next sections explain how to use the registry for hardware control, networking configuration, user administration, and domain server management and detail how to manage Windows 95 users with the System Policy Editor. A final section covers third-party registry tools and extensively documents the registry keys. The author covers both the Windows 95 and NT registries but, because of their many differences, discusses them in separate sections. This approach makes sense for administrators who will probably need to work with both types of operating systems. If you're trying to master the registry, the core system-configuration database in Windows NT and Windows 95, you'll appreciate this book's clear writing and technical depth.

What a wonderful read! I can't claim to be a full Little Women fanatic, but I did love the book as a kid. As an adult, I really enjoyed this retelling! How wonderful to have the same themes of family and sisterhood set in a context of current day. More specifically, I loved that it was in Brooklyn, that it's a blended family, that it's an interracial family, that it deals with modern day topics, etc. In a world where so many books seem to erase the existence of working class people, people of color, LGBTQ people, the military, etc., it was refreshing to read a story that acknowledged and celebrated that those things exist! The only bits I didn't like were at the beginning where there is some (what felt to me) forced exposition about how the family came to be formed. My guess is that this may have been to cater to a YA audience; myself, I think some illustrated endpapers or pre-story panels with a family tree might have done the job without being quite so heavy handed. But after that initial part, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.Without spoiling anything, I can say there were pages that made me grin and others that got me all teary. I read the book in a day, and immediately handed it off to my wife to be read. I'm excited that the book exists, excited to have read and enjoyed it, and excited for the day when my two kids come across it on our bookshelf and ask to read it.

I purchased this book for my 10 year old daughter. She is in the 4th grade and doesn’t like reading tradional novels but loves graphic novels. I loved the original little women and thought that it would be an accurate retelling like the babysitters club graphic novels which are her favorite. There weren’t any reviews because it was so new so I didn’t realize there was a child coming out as gay in the book geared toward elementary age kids!!! It did have a great storyline and she enjoyed the book but discussion of sexual orientation isn’t appropriate for young children!! This should be geared toward middle school children.

As a fan of Little Women I wanted to read this. I loved the LGBTQ rep. The art style is amazing and adorable. I recommend this for anyone who has read Little Women and those that are looking for a quick Graphic Novel to read.

But I really liked this book. I'm a traditionalist. I first read Little Women in a beautiful hardcover edition that my mother had been given for her 12th birthday - in 1932. I also loved the film starring Katharine Hepburn as Jo March. The updates in this version were very thoughtfully done, and with a little effort one can follow the trajectories of the stories from the original and gain new insights. It might be a tad too happy ending (*spoiler alert*, Beth does die in the original), but I was willing to go along.

I never write reviews but I had to for this book. Only 1 other review? It needs far more!I am a middle school reading and writing teacher, and as you may know, there are some crappy books out there for teens- badly written, badly illustrated, trite and predictable... this book had none of that. I will be honest, I have never read Little Women (but I will now). I loved this book for many more reasons. A blended family was presented wonderfully as real people. I got caught up in their drama... (how much more can they take?) I loved the relationships as they were presented and the characters as they changed. I liked that the authors didn’t make light of poverty, as seen in so many other books and movies (I.e. “We have money but they have each other and that makes life great!”) Let’s be honest, life can suck if you’re poor, but the book did strike a good job showing these things are not opposites.Yes, some of the exposition was clunky times, and I am not sure the skin colors stayed constant throughout the book (which was a shame), but the characters drew me in. They seemed real... Black characters seemed Black, gay characters seemed gay, poor people seemed poor, everyone acted their age, unlike some movies where straight, white, rich actors play everything. As an adult who has read/watched numerous stories, I could see a couple plot twists a mile away (this will happen to her, that will happen to him...) but thoroughly enjoyed not only the journey, but the ending, which was near perfect. Not every plot line was wrapped up neatly, but that’s life, isn’t it? I would have been disappointed in this book if they had been. While I was a little dismayed at some clunky exposition (“This is Jo talking!”) I was thrilled at some history and other tidbits thrown in. I certainly didn’t know about the Black Panther/LGBTQ connection! And the writer certainly knew their musical history. As to the art, kids should love it. A hint of manga, a hint of cartoon, a hint of realism... the artist obviously thought about where the characters were located and how they interacted and moved from A to B, unlike some comic books today. No page, no panel was wasted.I want a class set. I really do.

I LOVED this re-telling of Little Women. The girls' characters were SPOT.ON. and I got the same roller coaster of emotions while reading this as when I read the original. It's a wonderful representation of a blended, bi-racial family, living in a multi-cultural neighborhood in Brooklyn. The love between the family members is so supportive and amazing. Please, please, please don't let negative reviews based on bigoted opinions affect your opinion of this novel. Even though it is about girls, I'm going to try to get my 11yo son to read it because it will spark SO many great discussions between us about so many modern-day issues.

Don't try to read this book too fast, you'll miss the nuances of Greg Gutfeld's sense of humor. This is a very enjoyable read. If you've seen him on Fox, you know how funny he is and how biting his satire. Makes me want to read his other books as well.

Greg is right AND he's funny in saying it. Great read.

In these mini-essays, Greg gives us bite-size bits of his thinking that have you laughing at one paragraph and mulling things over mentally in the next. Still can't climb onto the Libertarian bandwagon yet, but Greg does show us that certain lines of logical thought go beyond parties. Human nature and thinking that's not tied up in worthless emotions find a lot of us wanting the same things. Being able to get along and be productive. Good goals to aspire to.

Greg Gutfeld is a very funny guy. I'd love to hang out with him over a couple of good steaks and yack about the increasingly absurd nature of what passes for public discourse these days. I am sure he would be a real hoot. However, on paper, his rough tone sometimes rubs me the wrong way; just a little. After 50 pages or so, I was done. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy's rap. I just found it starting to feel a little predictable, and moved on to something else. That's just me; you might be one of the many who get a real charge out of him. I suggest picking up a used copy for cheap and giving the guy a run. You may find yourself laughing your head off.

I love "The Five" & I enjoyed this book; I tend to take everything too seriously, but Greg reminds me not to do so: waste of energy!!! I laughed & cried simultaneously…something I haven't done enough of since becoming an adult!

This is the first book of Greg Gutfeld, but it seems like I have been reading his work for my whole lifetime. That very well may be because Greg speaks my heartfelt beliefs! But in a MUCH more humorous way!!! You cannot read any section of this book without realizing two important facts; 1) This guy is spot on with everything he writes, & 2) This guy is one of the greatest humorists since Will Rogers!!! He is blanking hilarious!!!Greg is a co-host on The Five, a news & commentary show on the Fox News Channel every weekday at 5:00PM EST and Red Eye on the same network at 3:00AM EST. I live for Greg's monologue on The Five, (the chemistry of this group is perfect), though I don't stay up for Red Eye very often. Greg expresses his Conservative/Libertarian views perfectly with great humor and analogies, which is the same in this book.In conclusion, I cannot recommend this book enough, and would suggest that you would also thoroughly enjoy Greg's 2nd book, The Joy of Hate, which is in this same style, though a bit more refined work. The books only leave two questions unanswered...who is it that Greg knows that has the skill of propelling flaming ping-pong balls across the room, and may I meet her? ENJOY!!!

I'm an independent voter. I like Greg's humor and easily understandable way of presenting political/philosophical topics. Educating and entertaining at the same time. Good gift for those friends who say they hate politics. This has a much better chance of holding their attention than many of the books from other pundits.

If you *love* Greg's monologues, you'll probably *like* this book. Problem for me was that since I only *occasionally like* his monologues, I got burned out quick when I tried reading a book so jam-packed with tightly-written verbiage as I would a regular book. It would have been better to have paced through it over a few weeks by reading only one or two bits at one sitting. The other downside to this book is that Greg's delivery - the eye rolls, the pauses, the glasses-as-prop - are a big part of his show's appeal, and the book (naturally) cannot convey those nuances.

This is not the actual book Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. It is actually a collection of speeches and essays about the REAL book and a summary of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. That fact wasn't stated anywhere on the selling page.

It's presumptuous for Amazon to ask someone to "review" a classic of literature ... but I'd simply like to point out that in my opinion Stevenson is one of the great masters of light, elegant Entertainment Lit during its last great blossoming: Victorian England. Of course even the greatest classic English lit (ie Shakespeare's plays) were designed as entertainment: the more pompous, formal, ponderous moralistic stuff (like Johnson) survives only in academic circles and was probably endured rather than enjoyed even back in the day. But Stevenson is as pure an entertainer as Fred Astaire: breathtaking, charming, playful, he's chock full of of small, masterful asides but, like Stephen King's, they thrill and amuse but in no way distract as the tale races along -- they're like white water in the rapids. See for yourself: just find the first page of Jekyll and Hyde anywhere online and skim it -- you'll find it just feels like skimming, you'll be in a whole new world with a witty genius for a guide..

I love a good story of a mad scientist. It is told from the third person perspective of Dr. Jekyll's close friend Mr. Utterson. It's funny to me how long it took for him to put the idea together, though having heard of this story long before I read it, I imagine the thought of someone being two different people is hard to fathom.Still, I enjoyed the surmounting evidence piling up for the real story and especially found it funny that Mr. Utterson had in his possession a letter that would explain things (even a little) very early on from Lanyon.I expected the book to be told from Dr. Jekyll's point of view but I really liked that it focused on a concerned friend trying to understand what was going on with a mysterious will.

I am reading Stevenson's complete tales chronologically, so this is my second volume, after _New Arabian Nights_. In this review, I will focus on the tales included in _The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables_, as the book is in fact titled. For general comments on Stevenson, please see my review of _New Arabian Nights_, in which I comment, among other things, on Stevenson's ability to entertain his readers, a gift that so many writers, even so many popular writers, lack._The Merry Men_ (1887), a collection of 6 tales, is a worthy successor to _New Arabian Nights_ (1882). I do not find either one to be "better" or "worse" than the other; they are both equally pleasing and entertaining, and both are excellent examples of Stevenson's seductive narrative voice, a voice that combines suspense with vivid descriptions and a touch of humor. This mixture results in some of the most readable stories in the English language, as authors such as G. K. Chesterton, Jorge Luis Borges, Jack London, and Ernest Hemingway have remarked. The two collections are, furthermore, equally wide in scope, including elements of adventure, satire, parody, allegory, and the supernatural. I will comment on the stories included:* The Merry Men: The title, as has been observed, refers to a particularly dangerous group of waves. The story takes place in an island, to which the protagonist, Charlie, retires. Aros, a farm on the island, is the property of Charlie's uncle Gordon, whose daughter, Mary, Charlie wishes to marry. Aros is famous for the shipwrecks that take place nearby, due to the "merry men," so Charlie is not only pursuing Mary, he also hopes to find the treasure of the sunken Spanish ship Espirito [sic, should be "Espíritu"] Santo. A great story, reminiscent of "The Pavilion on the Links," from _New Arabian Nights_.* Will o' the Mill: A story in three parts, this is one of those narratives that cover the entirety of a character's life. Will lives in the country, and wishes to see the world. His life is changed when he notices Marjory, the parson's daughter. I found this to be an excellent story, and I must say it is not as predictable as may appear from the description. The good thing about "life-stories" is that they allow you to observe the destiny of a character, and Stevenson lets you draw your own conclusions from Will's life journey.* Markheim: Borges included this story, along with the entire _New Arabian Nights_ collection, in one of the volumes of his "biblioteca personal." This is one of Stevenson's most famous stories, on the same level as "A Lodging for the Night" and "The Bottle Imp." I cannot say much about it without giving away the plot. Let me just say the story relies on the unexpected, and by reading the first two or three pages you would never expect what's coming. One of the gems in Stevenson's oeuvre.* Thrawn Janet: A rare piece, as it is written in Scots! I understand there is only one other story that Stevenson wrote in this language, but it appears to be an uncollected tale. "Thrawn Janet" is a creepy ghost story, not a very profound one, but very entertaining nevertheless. The language may pose a slight challenge, but I am an ESL student and I had no trouble at all understanding the story. (The reason why I call myself an ESL student, by the way, is that I believe one does not simply stop being an ESL student; learning a second language is a wonderful life-long process, no matter how advanced one may be.)* Olalla: According to Borges, Stevenson got the idea for this story from a dream. "Olalla" takes place in Spain, and this tale is another achievement in setting construction. A convalescing soldier stays at the estate of a very strange Spanish family, composed of a very basic son, his mother, and his mysterious, elusive sister, Olalla. The ominous presence of an uncanny portrait is an excellent addition to the plot. A compelling read, this was my favorite story in the collection.* The Treasure of Franchard: Stevenson ended _New Arabian Nights_ on a lighter note with "Providence and the Guitar." He follows the same effective formula in this collection, with "The Treasure of Franchard," and in this case, with much greater success. This is a simply hilarious story about a family that adopts a boy who has the reputation of being a thief. The tale is mainly about the effects that wealth can have on a family. The story points to--and even lampoons, though respectfully--the work of Edgar Allan Poe._New Arabian Nights_ inspired me to read all of Stevenson's tales. _The Merry Men_ has increased my enthusiasm for the work of the immortal Tusitala, or "Teller of Tales," as the Samoans called Stevenson. Both of these works will fascinate lovers of the traditional short story. I look forward to reading _Island Nights' Entertainments_ (1893), the last collection of Stevenson stories to appear in the author's lifetime, and will share my reaction to it in a review. Thanks for reading, and enjoy the book!
