A glorious living thing.” —Florence Welch, of Florence + the Machine“yrsa daley-ward’s bone is a symphony of breaking and mending. this whole book is an ache. and a balm. daley-ward effortlessly mines the bone. the diamond from the difficult. the things that are too bright and taboo. she lays her hands on the pulse of the thing. and gives wide air to the epic realities of women. the unfamiliar. the familiar. sexuality. poverty. sex work. sadness. joy. damage. and restoration. assigning them all the grace. all the nurturing. and all the love they deserve. an expert storyteller. of the rarest. and purest kind—daley-ward is uncannily attentive and in tune to the things beneath life. beneath the skin. beneath the weather of the everyday. her poetry and prose are intimate and distant. sonorous and staunch. delicate and metal. unwilling to yield and wondrously supple. daley-ward’s extraordinary talent. ability. to both see and write the veins of the true life. the true lives. is a gift. a breath.”—nayyirah waheed, author of salt. and nejma“[Daley-Ward] has a knack for getting directly to a story’s heat-point, and once there, to distill the emotions within it down to a line or two. . . . Seriously. I couldn't sleep so I started reading it and when am I gonna learn that reading poetry before I sleep isn't a wise decision? Because I just end up wrecked by emotions.Yrsa Daley-Ward does not mince words. She goes at it head-on. It doesn't mean that her poetry is pure tell and no show because it isn't. She's able to paint an imagery that would be vivid in your mind and fierce in your heart. I repeatedly had to roll over my bed because I had to pause reading and just soak it in.Her poems on mental illness are bookmarked and highlighted in my Kindle. In fact, I bookmarked a handful of poems and highlighted several passages too. There was simple beauty in her succinctness, yet it slowly pierces through the heart. The collection's pretty short and features some prose of hers too. I read it in less than an hour, I think? It's a good way to pass the time and just relish the waves of anger, love, hope, lonesomeness, and all these other emotions wash upon you."The worst thing about somebody who betrays you, somebody who turns out to be a completely different person to whom you first thought, is the love that you still feel in your heart for them, embedded so deeply into the narrow spaces of yourself that you cannot access it to try and remove it."

I can't seem to find a nicer quality JPEG for this. Sigh. That blur just bothers me.But beside that, this is yet another poetry book. Although, don't be fooled , there are some poems that are actually flash fiction, short stories. It's really up to you to decide if it's poetry or not. I consider it poetry and prose poetry. Ward delves into short stories, flash fiction. Flash fiction is sort of a poetry form itself, since it needs to form a scene, but a writer has to struggle to write words in the most claustrophobic of spaces, the shortest breathes. some of them are good at it and they write in one inhale and exhale. That is the writing for Bone, it chronicles scenes of family breaking apart, snippet by snippet. Our mental walls cracking as society's sharp objects, racism and sexism, the prejudices of others and our own selves, peeling us flake by flake, till we are nothing but a bone. But bones are hard, but they contain nerves, which are sensitive.Bone is poetry for those who feel like ending it all, who feel that their skin color, their language, their whole being is worthless. Because we may seem hard on the outside, but yet sensitive. There is so much we can take in, so much that we let it congest our insides. But this sounds like something that has been repeated too much, but her writing just feels so real, yet delicate enough not to hurt you too much, not to stab you too many times. She is a very special writer, one that is quite rare. I actually find myself wanting to read her words over and over again. It's a special gift, when you can craft words that can be engraved in everyone's skin, gently, with little pieces of love and hope sewn in.Rating: 5/5Originally published here: [...]

WHETHER YOU’RE DANCING DUST OR BREATHING LIGHT YOU’RE NEVER EXACTLY THE SAME, TWICE.This is a raw compilation. The title does this book justice.bone.Completely stripped bare for the readers.I could tell the author wrote of what she knew. I felt her in each piece, humming under the current of the words poured onto the pages. She is talented, however, I related to very few of these. There were lines and sections and poems I completely adored. Then there were others that left me thinking, “Wait, what?” Sometimes I honestly could not follow her train of thought.Another problem I had was that she seemed to be on again, off again with punctuation. Some poets like punctuation, others don’t, but at least pick a side. With my minor frustrations, this was still a good book to read. Parts were even great. So great, in fact, that I’d say the book as a whole is worth it. The feels were powerful, even if I couldn’t fully relate to them.

If you're looking for Nayyirah Waheed in Bone, don't. Yrsa has her own compelling and beautiful voice. Bone is a very honest and insightful read that explores mental health, being a woman of color, sexuality, death, and matters of the heart.I can definitely relate to bone--being a woman of color and suffering from a mental illness. Her poems on mental illness stayed with me and wouldn't leave. It allowed me to be honest about my struggle. Some of my faves are "mental illness", "to the elders", "issue", "panacea", "what love isn't" and "emergency warning". And there's so many poignant lines like "One day i will tell you what I've been. It will scare you" and "I cannot find the God you serve and I have been known to stay out all night searching." Bone really spoke to me. Let it speak to you.

Sex, death, family, and mental illness are among the big themes tackled in this lovely book of poetry from a Black writer with West African and West Indian heritage, raised in England. A gorgeous reminder of how much I need to actively seek more diverse writers not just in fiction but in poetry as well. Daley-Ward's voice is gutting and true.

Unfortunately this wasn't for me. It felt like it was all over the place and some of the "poems" were several pages long and they sounded like ramblings to me. None of the poems stood out to me either.

An amazing, raw collection of poetry that will shake you and challenge your thinking. One of the best I've read in a very long time, and it really hits home with some of the experiences I've had in my life. Just fantastic, you won't regret it.

I could not find this book in any bookstore. I was quite pleased to find it on Amazon. This book is perfect for me during this time in my life. I have spent years combing through bookstores trying to find books that would help to soothe my emotional wounds. Bone is that book and I found it on Amazon.

The great contribution of Professor Levine's book, as I see it, is its very broad picture of the history and ethnography of the various people who inhabit what he terms Greater Ethiopia. This would includes, at least, the current countries of Ethiopia and Eritrea. He manages to give an extremely valuable accounting of both the ethnographic (anthropological) and the historical scholarship -- two worlds that are not customarily combined.By and large, he sees two contrasting cultures: a) that of the Amhara (and associated Tigreans), and b) that of the Oromo, also known as Galla. The ancient civilization of the Amhara is Christian and Jewish, while the culture of the Oromo is, traditionally, African pagan, although today the Oromo have largely adopted Christianity and Islam. In Levine's view, it is the synthesis of Amhara and Oromo, under emperors who trace their origins to King Solomon, that makes for the unique social system that he calls Greater Ethiopia. The key to the self-understanding of the people who embrace this synthesis, according to Levine, is the fourteenth century Tigrean literary work "Kibre Negest" ("Glory of Kings," sometimes transliterated as 'Kebra Nagast').Levine's work is now more than thirty years old, so we would not expect it to cover all of the latest scholarship. The second edition of 2000 has a new introduction and additions to the bibliography, but is otherwise unchanged. One of the virtues of these additions, however, is that Levine explicitly mentions the fact that "three important studies have transformed our understanding of the Beta Israel (Falasha)," i.e. the Ethiopian Jews. Here he lists the works of Steven Kaplan, Jim Quirin, and Kay Kaufman Shelemay. In addition to the history and ethnography in this work, there is also an attempt to apply the theories of Max Weber, Talcott Parsons, S. N. Eisenstadt, and other "grand theorists" of sociology. Being more empirically minded, I do not find this kind of theory very helpful in the present context. This may very well be my own shortcoming rather than that of the author. In any case, no amount of "grand theory" can substantially diminish the value of this book for anyone looking for empirical description. All around: an astounding feat of scholarship.

Donald N. Levine's classic work on the social evolution and integration of the many ethnic groups that make up Ethiopia has been a must reading for all sociologists and those concrned with economic and social development in Africa and elsewhere since the book was first publilshed by the University of Chicago almost 25 years ago. The author has now (year 2000) updated his work with the addition of a new and comprehensive introduction that incorporates recent developments that have occured in Ethiopian society and culture since the book was published. The book has just been translated into Ethiopia's official language, Amharic, testifying to the importance and relevance of the work, in spite of the major transformation, including a revolution, that the country has gone through. The book provides new perspectives and fresh analyses on multi-ethnic societies, and is highly recommended to all who wish to understand the interplay among sub-groups, whether ethnic or otherwise, in today's conflict-ridden societies of Africa, Asia and even central Europe.

This book is one of those classics that never stays on the bookshelf for long. It should be required reading for all those interested in sociology or development studies in Ethiopia. The model describing the evolution of Ethiopian society presented by Levine has withstood the test of time, and is indeed proving more and more useful as time goes by.

A very informative book about a people who have never been colonized by the corrupted cultures of "Western European" civilization.

This is an old book without much needed updating. I have a special interest in southern Ethiopia and this book was too out o date to be helpful.

Guess I wanted more about spiritual/religious ethnic information.

Throughout history there have been large traditional polities inhabited by a number of different ethnic groups. Such countries exist right up to our own days, but their number has shrunk. The Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottomans, Russia and its offshoot the USSR, and the Incan Tahuantinsuyu are examples of such political entities in the past; Iran, India, Myanmar, and Indonesia may be examined today. Ethiopia is another. Many ethnic groups, speaking a large number of different languages, practicing several religions, and living in a wide variety of ecological zones following different styles of life, inhabited the country we know as Ethiopia (and Eritrea as well). Is there anything that such conglomerations of people have in common ? Or is there really no reason why they shouldn't break up as did the Soviet Union or Ottoman Turkey ? They could form small, ethnically homogenous states. (or could they ?) Perhaps, on the other hand, there IS something they all have in common. Levine, in this highly-interesting overview of Ethiopia and its multiple cultures, tries to establish what exactly the many ethnic groups of Ethiopia do share. Why can we look at it as a 'culture area' and not just a bunch of unrelated peoples and tribes? Unfortunately for him, soon after his first edition got published, Ethiopia broke up into a welter of conflicting groups, most ethnically based. One could comment that it seemed they didn't have much in common. It took many years and the loss of Eritrea before things quieted down once more and Ethiopia began to develop into a modern state. He tried to address this situation in the second edition. No doubt the peoples of Ethiopia DO have commonalities, starting with a shared history and the tendency to use Amharic as a lingua franca. The many small kingdoms that existed up to the mid-19th century modeled their rule on the Amhara version, claiming descent from Solomon etc. Trade and even warfare brought all the peoples into contact, many ritual practices, food taboos, and ideas about the supernatural existed across ethnic lines, some peoples (ex. Galla) changed their religions, practices, or lifestyles as they came into contact with others. Finally, though fighting amongst groups was more or less endemic, they would unite to oppose external aggression. GREATER ETHIOPIA is also an attempt to describe the chief elements of Ethiopian society, both Amhara and Galla (along with a bit about others) to establish what the overarching culture of the Ethiopian culture area might consist of. It was a tough task to undertake and it seems to me that Levine has accomplished it very well. Perhaps more emphasis might have been put on Islam and the Muslim segment of the population. On occasion, he seems to fall back on sociological jargon from Talcott Parsons and S.N. Eisenstadt which may not have stood the test of time, but never mind, this book, like his "Wax and Gold" must be read by anyone seriously interested in Ethiopia.

I don't do well with ebooks and comprehension so I prefer to have print. This follows the Cisco etext perfectly even shows many of the interactive slides from the online textbook.

The book I recieved was unsealed, and had scratches and dents even though I bought a new book. However the content seems clean and unmarked.
