5 stars. Everyone involved in the experimental + electronic music / arts should have a copy of this book at home. It should be the topic of discussions both formal and informal. PINK NOISES belongs in every syllabus for any electronic music course (especially electronic music history, but really, any course) taught in every university, and especially universities who pride themselves on their electronic and experimental composition and music / arts programs. The interviews are insightful and unique to each artist, and the book represents a fair slice (FINALLY) of women, ethnicities, genres, from backgrounds of all sorts (creative / musical / non), in the field of electronic music / technology-related arts. Thank you, Tara.

To preface this review, this was the required textbook for an ASP.NET course I took through my university. I have taken numerous programming courses and this was my introduction to the world of MS ASP.NET. I received a 4.0 as a grade for the course.I'm not giving this book one star, because I did learn from it, but it was a very painful experience and it was more painful than it should have been. I'm not giving this book three stars because, in my opinion, it is not built for beginners to ASP.NET. If I had picked up this book as an independent study guide, on my own time, I would not have finished it and gone searching for another author. The first 4 chapters are a brutal start when you start from nothing. I feel the same way about some of the later chapters as well, even when you know a little bit.A general gist of my thoughts:• Some chapters are very well written (when discussing a single topic at a time) and most of the language didn't bother me, such as the use of contractions, the use of writing in the first person, and the writing style other reviews talk about. What did bother me was the number of times throughout the book the author would attempt to give every exception to the rule before ever giving a rule to work by. I was also stunned, and would get angry, every time I read, “We’ve already discussed X, so you should already know it by now, so we won’t discuss it again.”• I do not see this as a useful reference book that I’ll use in the future. It is written more along the lines of a specific story, and not in the style where I can look something up in the index, flip to a page, and make use of it.• We had a separate web project, outside the book but from Murach that complimented each chapter, to complete. I think it highlighted just how specific some of the in-book examples were. I’m glad we had the extra project as I did learn a lot from it. It took me a lot of precious time and I had to re-read some chapters 5-6 times to even get an idea on how to proceed in some cases. I made a lot of use out of the Microsoft Developer Network, which in many cases was better than this book.• Our professor, with over 20 years industry experience, who generally loves and raves about the Murach series in other courses, mentioned that he thinks this is the weakest Murach book he’s seen from them. He looked into about 10 other publishers and their ASP.NET offerings, coming to the conclusion that the rest were worse, even though this book is subpar. He kind of apologized, but when no ASP.NET book is stellar, you take the best available and go forward. I can follow that line of thinking. I guess there is room in the market for a better mousetrap… er, ASP.NET book for beginners. I feel like I had to fight with this book all course.In final review, this was not a book I would suggest others use if you are new to ASP.NET. I believe it assumes you already have 3-5 years experience in Microsoft based development. It was subject material I wanted to learn, from a professor I’ve had before. He’s great, other books he's used have been great, I’m the same person… it was the utility of this book that caused most of my problems.

I had recently checked this book out of the corporate Library where I work. There are about 60 copies avaiable for checkout, and I was #37 on the waiting list. I had to keep checking it out in order to keep reading it. This bacame an inefficient way to read the book so I purchased my own copy, and I am glad I did.This book is a fantastic learning tool as well as an excellent referrence book. I am currently taking an ASP.NET class and I have found that the book is actually in parallel with the class, making the class more effective.I would recommend this book to anyone trying to learn ASP.NET Web Programming with C# 2005. I also recommend the Murach book "C# 2005" as a companion book. And along with those two, their Murach's SQL Server 2005 for Developers is also a great companion book since most ASP.NET web application are data driven one way or another. With these three books you will be on the fast track to becoming a solid web developer in no time.This book is great for the novice as well as the seasoned professional. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn ASP.NET 2.0

This book is exactly what I needed to learn the ins and outs of Microsoft's latest ASP.NET platform. To get the most out of the text (no, I don't think this would work on Kindle...sorry), you need to treat the code in the text as the answer sheet and work out the code yourself. Same goes for page layout. Read the concept for the mini-project, look at the requirements, and act like your building something for a customer (or professor). If you just download the code or mindlessly type the solution, you won't learn a thing. I needed to see how ASP manages its pages and controls, so I made mistakes (without looking at the answers) on things like: !IsPostBack or !IsValid. These are unique to ASP and for a Windows, PHP or Java developer it was good to stumble and then find the solution in the text. I also like statements in several areas that say things like, "if your experience with C# is limited, you may have trouble..." instead of trying to be the one source for everything. Kudos to the publisher and author! Thanks for not inundating me with simple concepts. Greatly appreciate it.

I'm a huge fan of the Murach brand books. As a programmer teaching herself ASP.NET on the side I found this easy to pick up and get started learning with. The only issue I had was configuring the IIS, but that is part of the appendix. As usual Murach's has impressed me with the clean-cut writing, to-the-point examples, and reference-friendly that is hard to come by nowadays. If you want to get right into programming and not read long chapters where the author tries to entertain instead of educate; get this book!

I read most of this book over a weekend and that's a first for me. Generally, computer books are dry and boring. I was yet to finish reading any of them in its entirety and I have been programming for over a decade. But this book uses a clever approach of giving you expanded information on a topic on a page (generally the left one) and a bulleted summary description on the opposite page. So you can read the explanation, which is very well written, and then recap with the description. Or you can skip the explanation all together and still undertand the concept. The examples are good and illustrate the concepts quite well. The only reason I give this book four starts instead of five is that the database for the examples was specific to the MSDE version of SQL Server. I have both SQL Server 2000 and 2005 developer edition and could not attach the database to any of them. I was forced to download MSDE from Microsoft and intall it on my system. A waste of space in my opinion. The author should make available versions of the database of a higher version of SQL Server. Other than that, I am very happy to own this book.

This is the 8th book I have read by Mr.Carson...I have to say, that in general, they are entertaining stories. I do, however, see plenty of room for improvement. I spent many years in Law Enforcement and my feeling is, if you re going to have a protagonist that is a Law Enforcement Officer, you should have some general idea how it works. Mr. Carson needs to do some research. There is not an honest officer anywhere that would allow himself to be sexually assaulted by a City Council member without charging them immediately....It was pretty obviously just a sexually gratuitous scene. The book could easily have done without that. Detective Wolfe has been so beat up so many times, in real life he would be on medical leave...no one, not even Wolfe, could survive so many severe injuries and still function as an officer. Not to mention that some of his tactics are illegal and he would be on Admin leave, summarily fired if not charged with several felonies, and likely brought up on federal Civil Rights violations. There is also the fact that it is difficult to believe there is so much illegal, dishonest, and subversive politics going on in one small town...I mean, really? Seems it is present in every book. There is also the issue of every heroine being small, with a perfect figure, and for the most part, with big,perfect, blue or green eyes...is there something in the water? I want to move there if there is.... There is also the issue of frequent grammatical errors. Either spelling errors, or simply the wrong word being used. Most of them are simple mistakes that would be covered in English 101. Yes, these books are Fiction but if the stories continue in the same vein, maybe they should be called Fantasy.

This was my eighth book by this writer (and likely 8th review) starting with book #1 and going forward to this #8. The David Wolf series, of which these 8 books deal with has been a most pleasurable experience. What I most like about former Chief of Police, now, Chief Detective Wolf is his believe ability as a character. That is what drew me in at first read and what brings me back to the most recent read.There are several other characteristics about this writer's work that I also like, e.g., plot is always strong, and best of all, leaves me with great reader memory. In other words, when, if, I put the book down, I can come back to it without having to re read pages to remember what is going on. That speaks well, to me, of good continuity of plot. Character development is also well done. You know, and believe, why the protagonist is a good person, and why the antagonist is not. This book has several of each, all of whom carry this trait to the bitter end.I like good rising action leading to good falling action with anti climax and then resolution. Again, this book does not disappoint.I do not re-tell story lines in my reviews, but pick any in the series and be pleased. The good news is that Jeff Carson does not write cliff hangers, each book stands on its own bottom, so makes no difference where one starts. although I do encourage reading "Gut Decision" as a primer, which the author will provide in return for a review.Carson is a gifted writer, among several that I read. One that comes to mind in that category is Lehane. If unfamiliar with Dennis Lehane, pick up a copy, or view the movie, "Mystic River" starring Sean Penn. But, I digress. Read this writer, you won't be disappointed. Who knows, you may end up like me, a David Wolf addict!

Chief Detective David Wolf risks his life to pull an accident victim out of the Chautauqua River after an accident... When Wolf goes to the hospital with his ankle injury, he meets the new girl in Rocky Points, Lauren Coulter... After he asks her out, Lauren invites Wold to lunch at her home for the following Monday... "Lauren is smart, beautiful, and just Wolf’s type" — or is she?What a great read! This is another one of those books that I kept thinking "just a few more pages" and I had finished it before I knew it. I can easily visualise Rocky Points, Colorado and the characters in this series now and that makes reading the books fun. This was definitely an edge-of-your-seat page-turner that will have the reader experiencing many emotions while reading. Follow the clues along with Chief Detective Wolf and try to solve the case — but watch out for the twists and turns! The big reveal is a shocker... I highly recommend this series and author, Jeff Carson!

Terrific story, not too many characters to muddle the story. The foul language certainly brought down a few notches which I am thankful for. I recommend this book

This is the first book I have read by Carson, and I was pleasantly pleased. He has a knack for wording scenes in unusual but amazing waysthat work.After reading hundreds of mysteries, it's hard to find one that's "different," and keeps me guessing. He was able to do this with this story.My only complaint is that one - it definitely is not a stand-alone book. Wolfe kept referring to the 'awful things" he had been through with this wife. (was she dead, had she committed suicide, in jail?). I would have liked to have had a brief synopsis of somewhere in the book as a place of reference. Also, my biggest complaint with action type books - how one guy can keep getting out of death-defying situations over and over again.Some of his scenes were very funny and well written. I could just imagine the officer who had to remove his fellow officers pants while she was in an emergency birthing position. He wrote it in such a way that you know that site will remain in that mans head every time he comes in contact with her in the future.

I was excited to find this book when I decided to build my own gaming desktop...it was up to date and full of good reviews. This is 6 months down the road and I'm typing this on the very computer it helped me build. I hadn't ever built a computer before and I didn't have any experts in person who I could call over to help in tough moments. I do owe quite a bit to this book and I don't want to overlook that, however there are flaws. I'm pretty sure that this book alone wouldn't be enough for everybody.My biggest complaint is that the book tries to not alienate people with "techno babble". Granted, I bought a "for dummies" book...I knew it wasn't going to read like a motherboard manual, but come on...we're talking about building a freaking computer here, you'd be foolish not to expect some "techno babble". You're better off having to google some technical terms than being left in the dark entirely!One moment that had me freaked out was connecting the buttons and lights of the case to the motherboard. The wires are all tiny and only are marked by random letters and maybe a + or - symbol...its the kind of thing thats a breeze after you've done it once or twice, but when you are figuring it out on your own with no help at all (the book provided *no* help with this at all...I just reread the section to make sure I didn't miss it the first time around).The other thing which I can't imagine other people having an easy time with is deciding exactly what to buy. What I did (and anybody interested in buying this book could do) is go to a well populated, well-informed forum and ask what people there would recommend in a certain price range. It would be nice though if the book would get a bit more in depth with this. I understand that books can't stay up to date with something that evolves as quickly as computer components, but there is basic advice that doesn't change nearly as quickly and overall rules that don't really change at all.I would still recommend this book to people because at least at the time I bought it there wasn't anything else out there that was quite as useful. It's definitely worth buying...just don't assume it's all you'll need to build your first computer if you're walking into this clueless and need handholding the entire way.3 1/2 stars

I got this book expecting to get a little insight on building a computer, but I never expected the book to be as thorough and understandable as it was. After reading this book, I was able to select parts to build my computer myself. I was able to make sure the parts were compatible and I only needed to use this book as a reference once or twice. The book explains each part necessary to install, including optional parts such as the sound card. Safety was emphasized frequently throughout the book to remind the reader to "ground" themselves before tinkering with the computer parts.After reading this book I was able to build my first computer with additional help from the case and motherboard manuals that came with my computer parts. This book was well worth the money spent to be able to safely make my own computer, with the parts that I wanted, that I'm on right now to write this review.Pros: - Understandable, even for novices - Detailed information about EVERY part - Helpful videos on accompanying disc - Keeps safety in mind constantly - Brief information on computer part choicesCons: - Video assumed that power supply was already installed into computer case, but book explains how to put the power supply in anyway

Shipped quickly. Book and DVD in great shape. The technology in it is out of date at this point, but the computers that i have were built around the same time this was written so, for me, it is an excellent resource. I'd like to build my own PC, but even if i don't, it will help me to understand what my PC's "doctor" is talking about .... and may help me to make some of the repairs and upgrades myself. It will also be an excellent foundation for any up-dated PC i might want to build and/or purchase. Excellent reference. (Wish they'd write an updated version, but that would be very difficult to do with the rate technology changes.)

I bought this book, along with "Fix Your Own Computer For Seniors For Dummies" for my ADHD daughter to learn how to repair her own computer. With ADHD, it is always difficult to keep her attention long enough for her to learn something. But with both of these books as reference tools, she recently built her own gaming computer!Of course now she is glued to her computer playing World of Warcraft against her twin brother.. but now she is confident in her ability to fix her own computer should it break again.

Jill Bolte Taylor is a neuroanatomist who teaches at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Bloomington, Indiana. She is the National Spokesperson for the Mentally Ill for the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center (Brain Bank) and the Consulting Neuroantomist for the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute. I found the book totally engaging. Perhaps it is not for everyone but critics should be reminded that Jill`s personality shines through at the end chapters. Bythen most of us feel very interested in her personal views even if we dont agree with all of it. The writing is not amatuerish as one critic posted Jill has made an exceptional contribution to so many in our society with her memoir.

I heard of My Stroke of Insight by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor after attending a stroke support group meeting as an assignment while I was a student in a Physical Therapist Assistant program. My father also had a stroke in 2008 so I was interested in reading about a medical professional’s account of what was happening to their body as they themselves were experiencing a stroke. This book was much more than I was expecting. As a medical professional myself now I wasn’t sure if Dr. Bolte Taylor would sound very clinical and dive into lecturing, but it was quite the opposite. Dr. Bolte Taylor did explain some neuro anatomy and structures affected during her stroke but she expressed her thoughts in such detail they were so powerful, human and gripping. As I read, I was so moved by her courage and determination to push through and focus on her recovery. I loved how she reflected on relearning everything and appreciated her right hemisphere where creativity lies waiting to be explored and how she embraced her artistic side after her stroke. This is a fantastic book I highly recommend for anyone even if you don’t have a relative who’s had a stroke or even if you don’t work in the medical field Dr. Bolte Taylor explains her story in a way that’s so moving any reader will walk away from it with compassion and so many lessons.

What do you get when you have a brain scientist, with a Ph. D., experience a stroke, survive, and then fully recover? You get a pretty amazing book detailing the experience and recounting a remarkable journey back to recovery.On December 10, 1996, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a 37-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist, suffered a major brain hemorrhage of the left side of her brain. As a result of her training, she had the knowledge, insight, and wherewithal to understand what was taking place and remarkably was able to seek help while her brain and body were failing her.The book begins with a couple of chapters of her background prior to the stroke and then progresses to the day of the stroke. It is also a delight to have a communicator with writing skills and the ability to dumb down her discussion to my level, a step above a cement mixer.One passage in her book asks the us, the readers, to imagine having our natural facilities, speech, vision, hearing, movement, memory, sensation, suddenly stripped away from our consciousness, leaving us with a peaceful heart and afloat in a sea of euphoria. You simply blend into a world of glorious emptiness until blessed sleep quiets the world around you. You awake to the same euphoria until you sleep again. Sounds peaceful if you reject life.One amazing aspect I saw here was Dr. Taylor’s ability to fight through her loss of mental capacity and realize that she would have to keep struggling if she was going make any sense of what was happening. As a clinician, she was determined to keep a mental awareness of the debilitation that was overtaking her. To have retained the impressions and impulses of an empty mind seems to be a remarkable achievement; her dedication seems relentless.I was moved by her exasperation with the medical community and its inability to evolve into a more caring and understanding world than they normally inhabit. The ability to communicate with a person in Dr. Taylor‘s condition seemed alien to their way of providing care. This is a phenomenon that has frustrated many patients, although most are not as badly injured as Dr. Taylor. I suspect that her criticism may have positive effects.The author starts her book with a simple exploration of the brain and its functions.We relive the morning she had her stroke, a relentless narrative of her injury. I actually tried to shy away from her descriptions of senses leaving the body and mind. I was anxious trying to figure out how she was going to get help. Then we arrive at the hospital and a world where help is expected, but seemed a great agitation to Dr. Taylor because of the hustle and bustle that aggravated her injury because of the noise.Eventually Dr. Taylor leaves the hospital in the company of her mother, a remarkable woman with the same fortitude and determination, who, sadly, passed away in December 2015. We agonize through Dr. Taylor’s slow return to partial functionality with Mom as a patient caretaker, experience a complex surgical procedure to her brain, and eventually work our way back to a nearly normal life. It’s a fantastic journey that will have you clenching your fingers and curling your toes as you physically experience the dismaying world of confusion and hopelessness. A weekend with this book was better than two weeks of evenings fighting with the "documentation" that exists elsewhere. After working through the examples in this, you'll be able to fight your way through the CA reference documents to do new things. I highly recommend it, with no reservations.That said, I have two criticisms of the text: their presentation of code snippets and the shallowness of their applications. The code itself is solid, with good references and such, but it's split up into a couple dozen of snippets for each chapter, which is kind of difficult to work with. It may be that it's impossible to present things in a better way, though. As far as the shallowness goes: as you build off their basic apps, you'll notice that things get a lot more complicated, rather quickly. I'm definitely glad they didn't throw us into the deep end of this right off the bat, but, at the same time, it's nuanced to integrate CA code alongside UI code. A simple drum machine or synth keyboard app would be really helpful, after showing us the trivial CLI apps.On the whole, this is a fantastic and indispensable book, with a couple of things to improve to make it perfect. If you're looking at working with Core Audio, glance at Apple's documentation, then buy a copy. It will save you a lot of time and frustration.

This is long overdue as i got this book at the end of 2012. I read and worked through each example codeset once with both fascination and struggle. The struggle was a mix of both, what the authors', Chris Adamson and Kevin Avila, pointed out early in the read, that being this stuff, Core Audio, is not easy, and with programming I'm self-taught which has both blessings and curses in learning behaviors.The book is written with reality 'how-to' and art, and I would add a sense of humor which keeps it from being a dry interpretation of Apple engineering. Though the latter is brilliant Apple's documentation is dense and cumbersome which in 'Learning Core Audio...' authors' Adamson and Avila took that brilliance and laid it out in somewhat baby steps and breadcrumbs which make the subject accessible and practical.As pointed out early on, 'Learning Core...' is not a beginning programming book but an advanced topic that assumes both exposure with the C language, Mac OS, Xcode and Objective C. This said it had been several years since I had thought in the C language or any language for that matter till I began the journey with Objective C about two years ago. What I found however was that as I worked through the example code which I would say don't just download it, physically type it in and absorb it. After you see what the codeset will do manipulate it and see what else it will do. This approach has pushed me and given renewed programming confidence and I personally thank this book for doing that.I will add to that, in my case some of the chapters and projects took me multiple reads to 'get it' partly as it's how I learn. In fact I'm still revisiting a great deal of the book for clarity and referral as I work through my own ideas and projects.The only criticism I would make on this excellent work and this was through my experience which may have been my setup and version of Xcode as initially i was using 4.2 on Snow Leopard. I found on a few projects to get them to work I had to include framworks not mentioned in the example code. This may have been my oversight or misinterpretation but there were a couple of projects which appeared to only need the AudioToolbox framework and I found through trial error that I had to add ApplicationServices a time or two. I will say prior to this book all of my work with Objective C and iOS had been coding for graphical apps. The majority of projects in this book make command line Terminal or Xcode Console executables and not iOS apps. This said, the plus in that is you will learn to code for the OS X operating system as well as being able to move the code with some modifications in to the iOS world.Bottomline Chris and Kevin's 'Learning Core Core Audio...' is excellent, inspiring and confidence building for those interested in delving in to this 'black box' of chip and voodoo mystery.

I've gone through a LOT of core audio-related code, samples, articles, blog posts and documentation and found myself spinning my tires a lot. I'm definitely an advanced programmer who has a background in audio, which is why I've always been so frustrated at Apple's lack of good documentation or samples on this.This book changes all of that.Extremely well written, will go deep when needed but not needlessly so. It's not for every programmer--you have to really love what you do, and love audio too--but if you fall into that latter category... a person who doesn't mind getting dirt under their nails, then you can absolutely make CoreAudio sing here (and if you've got the algorithm, you can do so literally!)All in all an excellent, well-written book that will not disappoint!

The cover is lovely but that is all. It says it has tabs. It does not. I does have the letters of the alphabet printed in the upper corner of the page. That would work ok if it were on the outside edge but it is not. The letters are all the way in the center where the pages are bound so you have to pry the book completely open to see them. Maybe I got a defective one that was bound incorrectly??? I am returning.

I liked it because it had scripture on front from the bible.

I've read the entire series and have enjoyed the first 5 books so much that I must have read them a dozen times each. Maybe it's my expectations or anticipation made this one a bit of a disappointment. Now, this is not to say that I didn't like the book but I just felt the style was slightly different than what I had gotten accustomed to. It felt like this story was told in a bit of a rush and I felt the there wasn't as much character insight as before. Without going into spoilers, I still say this is a great series and a fitting chapter in the saga, but I personally thought that this was a touch behind the first books.Now, let me read it again and see what I think! :)Read it a second time and wanted to comment that the short story after the book about Maddie is exactly what I felt was missing. The pace was a bit slower so there was a bit more insight to the character's inner thought.I still absolutely enjoyed the book, the 4/5 is just to show that out of all of them, I felt this one was paced a bit differently.

Very good book, I wish they would do a story with Halt, Will, Horace and Hal and Stig.

I thoroughly enjoy the journeys John Flanagan takes his readers on as virtual crew members of the Heron. I read them to be able ro book talk them with my students and because I love Mr Flanagan’s writing style and imagination. I look forward to each book, and his narrator, (I buy his titles as audio books is the best of the best! The only negative is I wish J F could write faster!

Mr. Flanagan has again woven a tale of compelling intrigue and sentiment. The Brotherband is drawn into a rescue operation at the behest of Stig's long lost missing Father and the pirate and adventures Hal and the others encounter will keep you rocking from chapter to chapter like the rolling of the Heron on the sea. Don't miss the short story at the end of the book, it is pretty good, too.

Another great story, however, I am disappointed that the previous story was barely mention and we didn't get enough character development of other characters.

This is a good series. I love how the characters have grown. I also enjoyed the short story in the back. I will be reading the next book.

I started reading the Rangers Apprentice stories with my son years ago and then followed with the Brotherband Chronicles. Here's another tale of youngsters being called upon to save the day (and a prince). Sig's father is featured in this story and needs a favor from his son and the crew. Very well done.

Okay....Mind Blown. I literally read this book all night and finished at 3. I have no clue how you write these books, but keep writing. Don't stop.....Please. These books are great.
