I'll start with saying the problems with this book is not the author's writing. The two biggest issues is lack of knowledge about his subject matter and his poor structuring skills. I going to spoil the first few chapters but it might save you time and frustration. I like realism in my apocalypse/dystopians, it's why I read them. In this novel, Simon a sensitive kind of guy prepares for his first hunt ever by doing a purification ritual, rubbing his naked body with charcoal and tripping off into the woods barefoot with a spear. Ever seen someone walk barefoot in the woods who doesn't have leather for skin? It's a noisy painful process. Not for Simon, he just creeps.up on that defenseless deer. First off, deer aren't defenseless. They have a flight response coupled with incredible sight, smell and hearing. There is a reason hunters sit in stands, all still and quiet.Naked Simon creeps up and kills it with one spear stab. On his first hunt. You're lucky to see a damn deer on your first hunt. I nearly cried with old Simon at how ridiculous this was. It goes on with two knowledgeble country boys tossing chili cans in the brush by their sleeping area. Even boy scouts know that's a good way to wake up with a raccoon in your face. The thing is I can just grumble and let that go, if, IF the story is good. Here what killed it for me. We follow poor anxious Simon back to civilization after 2 years alone in the woods. He is a bundle of nerves, jumping at shadows and the reader is jumpy with him. The in a great tension filled moment, Simon, trying to siphon gas, slices his hand open and screams curses. Then he hears a kid's voice say "Hold it right there mister." And you're all in the moment when he pulls a common ploy, end chapter, switches to a new character. Okay. Annoying but I'll skip ahead. The next Simon moment is a flashback to two years ago! Seriously? This pissed me off. So I skip ahead more. Next Simon is lamenting that he killed the kid, but decides it's the past and.he won't think about it!!!! No kidding. That's all you get! He builds up a great tense moment and then delays twice, before blowing you completely off. The point of tension is to keep you reading, not make you quit. I quit. Way better books out there. I guess I decided to hold it right there, mister.

I received this book from Read for Review in exchange for an honest review.Wow, what a great apocalyptic novel! I predict this book will become a big hit and would make a great movie. Two years after a horrible world war and disease have ravaged the world, Brian and Steven emerge from their well-stocked and comfortable bunker. They were on their way to collect Steven's sister, Bethany, from the bunker where she had been staying,in order to meet up with her uncle, General Driscoll. Meanwhile, Simon Kalispell and his dog, Winston, emerge from their secluded cabin in the wilds of Canada in order to make his way home to find his parents, as planned two years prior, before the commencement of the war. Eventually, their paths cross in unexpected ways. The book then goes back in time to explain who each ended up in hiding for two years, telling their back stories.First of all, I have to say how much I liked Winston, Simon's beloved dog companion.. He was every much as much a character as the humans!I found the book to be well-written. The story grabbed me from the first page and I could barely put it down. The relationship between Steven and Brian was well-developed. They were complex characters, I thought, and at times it was hard to read about what they were going through. Most parts of the book relating to them was very graphic. Simon was a very so,Italy, spiritual, character, very strong and resourceful. What happened when they all reached their pre-arranged locations is described in Book Two and is pretty graphic, and exciting. The other characters in the novel are varied, and not easily forgotten.Overall, I really really liked this book and recommend it highly, if you enjoy this genre.

I thoroughly enjoyed "The After War: The Complete Series" by Brandon Zenner and can honestly blame him for my lack of sleep during the last few days. The story is told in two parts - in the first, the author focuses on the cross-country trek of two separate groups, two years after a virus almost decimates the entire population. Part 2 follows the same groups as they acclimate to living with other survivors in towns and communities that are interconnected and protected by a trained security force.Simon is a rich kid whose parents were preppers and had prepared a cabin in the deep woods of Canada for just such a situation. Here, Simon, who by the way is an expert in tracking, hunting, and foraging from almost a decade with the scouts, lives with his dog, Winston. They've survived the 2-year quarantine period and leave to head back home to his family.Brian and Steve are cousins and best friends who live together in an underground bunker which was built and stocked with food, water and supplies to last three or more years. They too, must leave their quarantine after two years and travel east to link-up with their uncle after retrieving a sister and friend from another private bunker in another state.En route, both groups are in awe of the devastation and encounter others - some welcome - others not as they want to take everything they own. Oftentimes, they are outgunned, and are lucky to escape with their lives. Without supplies, Brian and Steve, weak from the lack of food and water, become lethargic and have a falling out. They become separated and Brian continues by himself, barely alive, finally reaching the bunker of Steve's sister and friend. After nursing him back to health, the threesome leave their sanctuary and set out to locate their uncle.Part II is about the community life of the survivors one year after the two groups arrived. They are doing well and set-up trades with neighboring towns. However, groups of mercenaries are traveling cross-country and overrunning towns - killing the inhabitants and taking all the supplies for themselves. Two such groups are heading their way and want everything the community has. The odds are overwhelming against the good guys...how will it all end? Readers will be on the edge of their seats for most of the story...heads-up!Highly recommended! I also have to mention that the author has a knack for describing things - adding off-the-wall comments or phrases about it that will make readers smile or laugh outright. You'll see what I mean. Great job, Mr. Zenner...writing an Apocalypse book without zombies!John Podlaski, author"Cherries - A Vietnam War Novel" and "When Can I Stop Running?"
