Most of this book is bunk. I loved it as a kid, but now that I'm older and know more about the events it describes, I used the book to teach my kids about the influence of society at the time of a books writing (a book with a female protagonist will only be read by girls, and therefore must have romance) and the dangers of taking historical fiction novels as historical fact.

This was purchased for a book to read for school. We read it out loud at home so all siblings could enjoy it. This was a great historical fiction book that helps make history come alive for both children and adults. We have enjoyed all the Scott O'Dell books we have read so far. His writing style is such that it is hard to stop and put the book down once you start reading it. We have read several books that have received the Newbery Medal Award, which is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. We have not been disappointed by any books we have read with the Newbery Award or a runner-up Newbery Award. All have been great quality writing.

An easy and interesting read! A true gift to have the journals of Lewis & Clark available to use, so we can read of their amazing trek, and so gifted writers can bring those journals to life for us.

This author takes historical people and events and creates a story to go along with it. My son, who is 12, loves this author so much we have purchased every book written by him. They have kept his attention, and he has reread several. My son's time and energy going into a book instead of an electronic device, can't ask for much more!

Excellent story. I love the strength that the author gave Sacajawea. It was a clear look of strength in spirit, character and physical ability that she displayed. What a fantastic role model for our children, and especially our girls.

Quick and interesting easy read. The ending kind of leaves it just hanging, but overall a good book. Would be good for kids to read.

I read this many years ago (15+\-) and to this day I think of it as having had a pivotal affect on my view of the world and approach to life. This book changed me. I'm forever grateful to Mr Jensen for what I imagine a difficult and liberating piece to write. It all at once grounded and liberated my heart and soul. It was profound at the time, but only in realizing that 15 years of life and living (and reading) later it still holds the place that it does in my mind, do I realize HOW profound. How can you ever thank an author for that?!

Beautiful and elegant, the world speaks to us through the author and the world has chosen it's voice well. A gifted writer and lover (of the world), Jensen takes us by the hand and leads us on a journey inside the web of life, a place we haven't lived in too long, a place we need to return to if we are to claim our part in the dance. Jensen uses a pen but in his hand is a sword. He cuts to the heart of our destructive impulses and bleeds us dry, only to fill up our hearts again with the essence of all life yearning to be set free. The book made me weep. It broke my heart and then mended it. READ THE BOOK!

Obviously, reason is not the guiding force in the journey of humankind. Obviously, if a workable and intelligent win-win solution to the Earth Crisis existed, we would have already found it and implemented it. Jung had a name for episodes of mass insanity, like Nazi Germany, or consumer society: psychic epidemics. Psychic epidemics are far more devastating than natural catastrophes (earthquakes, hurricanes), and reason is powerless to resolve them, because reason does not communicate with the unconscious.The "language older than words" refers the voice of the living planet -- the wind, the burbling brook, the ravens, the howling wolves, the rattling leaves. Everything is communicating, sharing, cooperating. Unfortunately, civilized humans have isolated themselves from the rest of the family of life. We no longer listen to the ancient language, which is always talking to us. We have become space aliens in our own home. Not coincidentally, we are racing toward catastrophe.Most eco-writers do not reveal a spiritual connection to life on Earth. Jensen clearly does, and this adds much power to his work. He is not a professional scholar who is systematically analyzing a sub-optimal process, he's a man who radiates love for the wild natural world, and deeply cares about it. He was abused as a child, and he grew up to be a violent, controlling tyrant. He physically and sexually abused his wife, sons, and daughters, including Derrick. The family lived in fear of his rage, and all of them suffered permanent emotional damage. Many years later, his father still refuses to acknowledge his violent past, and Derrick still has trouble sleeping. Jensen says that if he had to do his childhood over again, he would kill his father. He believes that it's essentially impossible to rehabilitate an habitual abuser.During the years of violent rage, the family members lived in a world of make believe, blocking out the fear and suffering. In order to survive the terror, they had to shut down emotionally. This family was not an unusual freak. Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse are commonplace in our society.In many ways, on a larger scale, our global civilization resembles Jensen's family. It's beating and raping our planet. Similarly, we feel powerless to stop the senseless savagery. We shut down emotionally. We pretend that everything is OK. We ignore vast amounts of information, and what we can't ignore, we forget or dismiss. Living behind a wall of fear, we become isolated from life, from our bodies, from our spirits. Isolation is poisonous.Humans are not essentially bad, but we have had the misfortune of being born into a culture that is speeding down the path of self-destruction. Jensen says: "Within any culture that destroys the salmon, that commits genocide, that demands wage slavery, most of the individuals -- myself included -- are probably to a greater or lesser degree insane." The central question of our time is this: "What are the sane and appropriate responses to insanely destructive behavior? In many ways, it is the only question of our time."One gift of Jensen's traumatic childhood was that it knocked off his cultural blinders. His father was a respected member of the community -- and he was also an abusive monster. Jensen came to the terrifying realization that our celebrated modern culture was as crazy and brutal as his dad. The first step on the path to healing is to acknowledge the existence of problems, to recognize the truth. Then, the process of awakening involves a series of deaths and rebirths, as useless things are tossed overboard, and replaced with healthier ones. It's about growth, and it's not quick or easy.This book is a dizzying non-linear tilt-a-whirl ride that zooms round and round in the insanity of our culture. I'd been reading some articles lately by Derrick Jensen, and always, I found them stunningly ... courageous ... because he constantly insisted on challenging us to consider, when-oh-when?, will we take the actions necessary to confront and at least 'try' to 'stop' the destruction of our planet. All this in a clear, unvarnished, authentic voice -- just a lyrical voice. His honesty and willingness to take a stand repeatedly took my breath away. Now, given what we're up against, how can I do more????

Nazarenes need to read this book. Too often eavangelical preachers will preach on a topic without tying it into the great meta-narrative that the Bible presents. I haven't heard any other Nazarenes preseneting the need for this, but I'm sure glad that Lodahl is raising his voice.Inspite of that, I only gave him 3 stars. That's for 2 reasons:1. He didn't do an excellent job in helping preachers to know how to tie in their sermons to the redemptive narrative of the Bible. Much of the scripture is not written in narrative form and Lodahl does not give clear instruction tot he would be preacher on how to preach through, lets say, the epistles. Though he is a reformed writter, I feel that Graeme Goldsworthy in his book "Preaching the whol Bible as christian scripture" did a better job. I recommend it to Arminians and Reformed alike.2. Secondly, there are some places where Lodahl entertains Open Theism. Open Theism is a thrological movement, that in my opinion, is heresy. One of its basic ideas is that God does not know the future. Lodahl seems to entertain this idea under the presumption that this would destroy true relationship.The fact that God is mysteriously complex in his unity, being able to act in time while maintaining his eternal atributes, should not be changed in for the simple thrology of open theism and its little God.I am Arminian, but it seems that some of the most solid works on Biblical and Narrative theology that remain conservative in nature are coming from the Reformed camp.

I enjoyed the subject matter of the book..The author presents fresh insight into traditional thought but does not stop there. If you want to go deep this book is highly recommended.

All I know is that this book was like a breath of fresh air at a time when I needed it most.The book reclaims what I believe should be at the heart of any Christian message (or any religious message for that matter). It is a book which gives an overview of Wesleyan theology through the use of narrative stories in scripture. But the point is not to force scripture down anyone's throat, or to force someone to think in a particular fashion. No, even a few pages into the book, that becomes clear. The author is greatly indebted to not only Weslyan emphasis, but also Process thought and the wealth of insight and beauty to be found in world religions.This book is about joy, beauty, mystery and the enounter of the "divine" reality in individual existence and in community. Each word bespeaks the authors deep love affair with life, and with the earth and with creaturely realtionships and joys. To finish reading this book is to be guarunteed a light heart and a deep smile. The message repeatedly conveyed in this book is that love is what matters most, and making the most of this life, loving this earth, and being aware of the wonders constantly around us. And through all that to hear the voice of a God reminding us that he loves us, and loves life as much as we do, and wants to be a part of it.A great read for anyone.

Yes, I too know the author and thus my review may be biased, however Lodahl's work is key to seeing how God acts within creation throughout the entirety of the Christian Scriptures. This book makes it clear as to how, as humans, we are to return back to faithfulness and find ourselves again in God's original intent of creation. I found the book entirely helpful.

An outstanding starting point for those interested in narrative theology in a Wesleyan context. While maintaining a strong biblical foundation, Lodahl has brought narrative theology into a vital relationship with the Wesleyan tradition.

I'll preface this by noting that I received a free electronic review copy prior to publication, on which this review is based. That said, I'm also buying a copy so I have the final edited version for future re-reads.This being volume 10 in an on-going series, I'm going to assume that you have already read the previous installments. If not, while the book is readable without having read it's predecessors, it will be much more enjoyable if you read them in order. It's part of an on-going story arc, not a series of stand-alone adventures featuring recurring characters. Also, while not wanting to share any spoilers here, it is very clearly not the final installment of the series. It does wrap up a section of plot in a satisfying manner, but the characters are definitely not getting to settle down for a happy retirement at the end of this one.I'm going to try to avoid too many spoilers here, but I am assuming you're read the previous books. In terms of characters, this book spends more time switching viewpoints than some of the previous installments. The storyline is about getting the two groups of characters who have been separated by circumstances in the most recent books back together, which naturally requires switching back and forth between them as the timeline goes forward, and they try to overcome their respective sets of not quite insurmountable obstacles.Don't assume that it's all action though - there is character development too. The alternate universe Kelsey gets a lot of attention, as she grapples with accepting that people in this universe are not the same as their counterparts in her home universe, despite identical appearances and backgrounds. I've liked that fact that she didn't resolve those issues instantly in the first installment where she appeared, and, avoiding spoilers, think the developments in this book were well handled.There are also several interesting developments that hint at plot complications in future books. The AI's may not be as monolithic in behavior as we have heretofore thought, there are some interesting theories proposed (but not confirmed) regarding how the original AI was corrupted, and a mysterious heavily guarded flip point that no one has an explanation for yet.In summary, this is a worthy addition to the series, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next one.

Terry once again weaves a good yarn in his empire of bones saga working to reunite the two main protagonists as we see them make enemies and allies as they finally get to the sol system and Terra, my only complaint is that is too short, leaving me wanting to read the next book like a Netflix binge, if you have liked the previous entries you'll love this one(full disclosure I did receive a free arc in return for an honesty review, but I also purchased the book as well)

If you're into serialized story telling, Mixon is becoming a master. Book 10 in the Kelsey & Jared saga does not disappoint. Aliens, intrigue, rebellion, evil AI empires, you'll find it all in the Empire of Bones saga.

I was surprised when the book ended, as I was so engrossed I lost track of my place in the book. I wasn't sure how the author was going to make everything happen and still be true to the story, but it happened. I can't wait until the next book to see how everything starts to come together in resolving the main story line.

Hope back and forth because Jared and Kelsey are separated, though a second Kelsey is there as well. Rushing to Terra and avoiding suicide missions, traitors of a sort, and paranoid rogue AIs is so much fun. Terry where is the next one, I want it.

This is a fabulous book! I love the Empire of Bones series! Such a great universe that Terry has created! Incredibly well written with great characters, story line, action and dialog! I highly recommend checking it out!

Great story. Keep them coming. The characters are well described and without ruining ing the story he even uses interesting ways to change known characters.

This is another great entry into the Empire of Bones saga. I've followed these characters for 10 books now and I'm excited to see where we're going. Terry mixes action, science, and social commentary as we explore what it means to be a leader and a hero.

Good read and some good advice for 50+ or if you want to get a jump on the aging process 40+

If you're getting along in years and think that it's ordained that you will decline, lose vitality, and become frail - READ THIS BOOK!! I did, at my cardiologist's suggestion. Changed my life - and my wife's. We're early 60s and getting strong and fit. We're exercising, hiking, doing regular stretching - and loving it. Feel better than we have in a very long time. Everything is easier. Energy is increased. Mental function is better. Fitness is critical as we age. Fitness is freedom. Fitness is dignity. Fitness is fun. We expect to be strong and active at least into our 80s. Unless we get hit by a truck.

This book changed my life. I read it about 5 years ago. I was a 52 year old overweight couch potato who had been inactive most of my life. Needless to say, I had never been athletic either. In my fifties I believed the popular misconception that you get older and your body falls apart. Turns out that's a symptom, not a cause. Long story short--I'm able to run a half marathon now and before I read the book I had never even run around the block. I lost 40 pounds, too! Younger Next Year is my fitness Bible. Eye opening and life changing!

I was the person that continually gained and lost the same 10 to 15 pounds over my entire adult life. That is until at age 50, I started lifting heavy weights. Within weeks, I was literally shrinking. I only lost around 10-12#'s but dropped 3 pants sizes. doing nothing but lifting weights. Since then I've done no cardio other than summertime cycling. I eat healthy and feel great and I thought I was "good-to-go". Until I read what this book has to say about the need for BOTH weights AND cardio to maintain health as we grow older. The chapters rotate between physician and patient perspective. It's totally changed my thought process regarding the importance of cardio. Extremely informative and very entertaining writing. I highly recommend you read and follow the advice in this book.

How could I begin to actually DO the ideas in Chris and Henry's inspiring book, Younger Next Year? Being new to the world of exercise and fitness myself, and wanting a program that would integrate the latest understandings of fitness this book if PERFECT. And when you go to do these exercises... before you know them all, download the two consolidated cheat sheets they offer at the Workman site: Warm ups and 25 sacred exercises are available at no cost at Workman.com. I reduced them to 66% on the copier so I don't have so many pages. Much easier than trying to hold the whole book open and carry it around with me.

I'm a huge fan of Younger Next Year. I've been doing the basic program for six years and it has really changed me for the better. Be warned that this book is mainly repackaged leftovers. If you have read the original, most of the first part will be review. The main message of the exercise program is good, but the "sacred 25" are apparently covered in Thinner Next Year (which I have not read). I also think the exercises seem to be a bit overwhelming. I doubt you could do the "warm ups" in less than 30 minutes, and the whole point of YNY is 45 minutes to 60 minutes of exercise six days a week. The book recommends to mix and match the exercises, and has a few suggested programs. Overall, however, I expected more guidance and a more manageable program. It almost seems like the purpose of the book is to lead to the purchase of the exercise DVD. Not a big deal because the book is cheap. So, overall, good effort. But, I would really have preferred an updated new edition of YNY that includes TNY and a more structured chapter on the exercises. Also, more involvement by Harry. Harry is featured a little here, but it seems largely repackaged.

GREAT BOOK! I loved the original book better though. He got softer when he was speaking directly to women. But honestly I prefer his humor and straight talk. I recommend this book very often. It's a great resource for the latest research on longevity and how to avoid all the modern diseases of inflammation crippling the unhealthy lifestyle of the western world. And it's written with humor and in a way that even the most non health say person could understand. Highly motivating! And bottom line message - You and You alone are RESPONSIBLE for having health or non-health based on the choices you make in everyday life.No Doctor, drug, surgery/procedure can save you from your own choices. Why not choose health and health for a long life. Its about what you put in your mouth, how often you move your body, building health relationships and being connected to something more real that ones' ego. Wonderful book!!!

Yes, I agree with everything the book says. But... it's a simple concept (exercise vigorously, daily, forever) and it is repetitive and gets to be a bit annoying. Also, half of the book is a motivational speech, and the other half is a medical explanation of the body. If you want to skip the book, just exercise HARD and get your heart rate up, six days a week, for an hour a day, for the rest of your life. But if you need a little motivation to do so, then by all means, read this book. It will motivate you.

Good book with many great points of interest. Leave it out and you can gain inspiration to jump up and exercise. Most of us don't get faster or more lithe as we age, so this book manages to give me impetus. I am not old, but I am 67 with two hip replacements and a weird left knee issue. You just have to keep moving! Some of the folks in the book are way out of my league and they have lots of time for all of these classes, etc. If you happen to work every day and/or can't afford all the special classes and therapies they chat about, don't feel guilty - just feel inspired to keep doing what you can do and enjoy.
