I absolutely LOVED this book. I was taken in by the story of the author's attempt to set up a self-funding historical estate. I found the detailed background and history of Sissinghurst even more engaging. The writing of this book is probably the best prose I've ever read. So elegant yet very readable. I can guarantee, if you enjoy reading sublject matter like this, you will LOVE this book!

I've long been a fan of Sissinghurst as a garden and I've visited it. I have delved into its history and the biographies of the owners, Vita Sackville-West and Nigel Nicolson. This book, by their grandson, is an amazing realization of the languished potency of the manor of Sissinghurst--not only the garden at the center, but the surrounding farms. It shows that sustainable practices can have good economic impact. It's a rich source of information about the property and it's very well written, so it is a pleasure to read.

An inspiring journey in history of a place and the people attached to it. A lesson in adaptation and standing firm for an idea. Like a highly refined version of the reality television show "Survivor" with different tribes, strategies, and agendas. Instructive on many levels from personal to global. A pleasure to discover.

This is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I liked it. I think the first chapter is the best most moving description of a lovely childhood that I have ever read! You've got to like history of place to like the rest, but if you do, you'll like this book.

The author did his homework to describe the once lovely Sissinghurst castle and grounds and to illustrate his passion for its restoration. However, it is definitely of more interest to students of English history and geography.

I love Adam Nicolson books. He writes honestly and wonderfully researched, in depth and then well told. It shows us the connectedness between past, present and future. A wonderful read !

This beautifully written history of the world that was and is Sissinghurst over hundreds of years is intriguing. I enjoyed getting a look look at the talented and complex Nicolson family including Adam Nicolson's grandmother, Lady Nicolson, Vita Sackville-West.

This book is an amazing history that pulls together all the background information that helped the author bring Sissinghurst back to being a working estate. In areas it is a difficult/slow read, but I found the information to be very interesting.

I had to order ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’ from a bookseller in the UK, as it will not be released in the US until September. It finally arrived to my home in Washington state a few days ago. After reading such incredible reviews, I couldn’t wait to be lost in its pages, so added it to my suitcase as I packed for work (I am a flight attendant). I didn’t have a chance to read it during my layover, but started it late last night on my redeye flight across the Pacific. I read it cover to cover in the five hours it took to fly from Maui to home, only pausing to wipe my tears on my apron and to pour sodas for the few people who weren’t sleeping in their seats.I have read so many stories of this time, some good and some not so, some acclaimed and some relatively unknown. The Tattooist of Aushwitz is by far the best. Heather’s ability to make written words come to life is a true gift. This is one of those books that I will carry in my soul forever.

Read The Tatooist of Auschwitz in the days before and after I visited Aucshwitz and Birkenau.There are times you read books for entertainment and times you read for knowledge. This may be a bit of both because it involves a love story too - Lale and Gita. But oh, the horror of their situation.Going with my usual format...Is it worth the cost? $7.99 - yes, absolutetly.Is it a page turner?Yes, it is. Ordinarily, I would argue that this kind of book does not need to be a page turner because that's not the point... but it is.Did I think about this book when I was not reading this book?Not at first, I was able to put it down for a week and go on with my trip. But as I got further involved, I found myself thinking about Lale's story more and more and wanted to get back to the book.Will I think about this book once I am finished?Lale's story stays with you. As mentioned above, I actually visited Auschwitz while reading this book. On display are many photos of prisoners arriving, prisoners on their way to be gassed, murdered prisoners, starving prisoners. Frankly I could not look - it was too hard to put a face to such horrors. For me, this book gave a name to the millions of people who perished at Auschwitz and who lived too.

Immediately reading the first few pages of this book, I was dismayed and increasingly skeptical of its written quality. While the real lives depicted in this story deserve awe and merit for their survival of such a catastrophic period, the portrayal of the story lacks depth.I was surprised to see so many positive reviews! A few others have been able to concisely pinpoint the problem with the writing - mainly the book is a narrative shell that primarily glosses over the struggle of surviving such dire circumstances to focus on a love plot with little dimension. Elementary prose and cheesy one-liners dominate this novel.At the very least, I appreciate the attempt to bring light to such a unique, real-life love story....

This book was designated as our book club's next read and though I was excited to read it, as I had read several good reviews, I kept putting it off as I felt that I knew, to some level, the horror of the subject-matter. Hence as I started to read it I was very uncomfortable, but as the book progressed I felt it a compelling read into the reality of human nature. I gave it five stars rather than four, as I felt four stars did not do it justice.

a holocaust book must be truly poorly written in order for it to deserve one star, but this manages to accomplish just that. this had almost no flow to it, was written on an elementary school level (with some curse words forced in), made auschwitz seem somewhat tolerable, and built little to no drama on some pretty amazing events. of all of the WW2 books that i have read, this ranks with the weakest. i couldn’t wait to finish it so that i could be done with the poor writing. sorry.

Absolutely loved it. What a wonderful, miraculous story of love and perseverance in amongst the horror and devastation of Auschwitz. For it to be true is just amazing, and shows the true strength of humans. Thank you to the late author for sharing this with the world.

A full 5 stars for this flowing factual literary work which “brings” Lale and Gita’s heart rendering love story into a pragmatic realistic accountable unputdownable read.The abhorrent disgrace and disgust of the holocaust cries out “lest we never forget”, which our retribution portrays in these stories being retold and remembered from generation to generation. The Jews will proudly survive and our voices will be heard in unity.My husband and I have walked through Auschwitz and Birkenau - a chilling icy tour of a deathly historical event in history which is incomprehensible albeit remembered.

Loved this book, was a true and honest account of one man's survial in difficult and simply awful circumstances.Everyone should read this book, it will definitely open your eyes to this man's story finding love in a horrific concentration camp, and how he helped so many survive what was one of the most terrible concentration camps ever built, Read it you won't put it down.

This was a fun book to read for several reasons. First, there is a crossover from Jennae's book, "Ross", Book 39 from "The Ghosts of Culloden Moor" series. It's not necessary to have read "Ross", but it does provide a little of the backstory.Second, I've read all of Vale's "Thistle and Hive" series, and thoroughly enjoy her imagination and writing style. So, I couldn't wait for her next book!In this first book of her new series, Bear Fletcher and his two brothers are on the run and being hunted by the English Dragoons. The English have stolen and destroyed all that mattered to them. Starving, they attempted to steal their own cattle back and are caught.During their escape, they are caught in an avalanche. This is no ordinary avalanche as it propels them to 2019 and to Delight, a small town in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. A fun read and I can't wait for the next in the series!!

I love this new series and excited to see what's in store for Kade and grieving Payton in the future books. Bear and Kirsten's story was great and I liked that the story was set in the present instead in the traumatic past that the brothers came from. After reading Wanted, I had to go back and re-read the book Ross, it's the story of Ross and Cassie's meeting. I have loved all of Ms. Vale's books and this one is definitely another great story. I received this arc for an honest review.

Bearnard “Bear” and Kristen’s story was very touching. Bear and his brothers have traveled in time from two years after the Battle of Culloden. All are in the run and a wee ghostie send them forward to the town of Delight, landing in the middle of a controlled avalanche.There are many twists and turns and a Winter Festival to attend before love conquers all.The best part of the story is the supporting cast in Delight including the main characters from “Ross” Ms Vale’s story in the The Ghosts of Culloden Moor series.Once again Ms. Vale does not disappoint in her writing. I’m looking forward to the other books in this trilogy.

What a great book. Living part time in avalanche country made me appreciate the opening chapter. This is a fun fish out of water/time travel story. Like that it was set in contemporary times. Just enough heat to keep it interesting. The villain was pretty easy to identify but suitably dealt with at the end. Can hardly wait to read the sequels when we get Bear’s brothers their HEA. I wonder who will be Kade’s heroine and who will heal Payton’s sorrow.

This is the first in the series “Delight” but a carry on from her book Ross (The Ghosts of Culloden Moor Book 39). I do not normally read contemporary books but I really enjoy Ms Vales time travel books, which are usually set in both time periods. I really enjoyed Ross but I found this book a little too contemporary for me as it is set in 2019 completely. It was a good read though with some stalking, adventure and of course romance. It was great seeing Ross and Cassie again and will still want to read Payton and Kades story. There was some mild sex scenes which this reviewer as usual skipped and it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book. I am only giving it a 4 because I would have liked a little more 1747 in the book, which is a reflection of what I like and not the book as with all Ms Vales books, it was a good read for those who like contemporary. I received this book as an ARC and reviewed with pleasure.

I read this a while ago for a class at my college, and I honestly remember being this invested in a book since I read Harry Potter when I ten. But seriously, it really helped me out in ways that I did not expect at all.It’s all laid out for you clearly in a way that’s not preachy or condescending. If you want to work in the entertainment industry via writing, production, business, etc. This book will actually tell what you have to do, what it’s like doing it, and how to do it in the best way imaginable. The writer wrote this was a TV executive for CBS and Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. Basically, taking her own experience, as well as other’s journey to success. Carefully analyzing those who succeeded in flying colors, and those who just didn’t know what to do. Then putting it all into this book. I even got to talk to her about being an intern, moving to LA, & good versus bad cover letters and resumes. So, things like being an intern, being a production assistant, how to make a resume, the importance of cover letters, how to survive LA, and what to do when you get an opportunity. All of it is laid out in the book, not only that, but the chapter on cover letters an resumes SAVED my life. So, if anything that I just wrote interests you, then this book is definitely worth the price!

This book is good if you're a high school or college student who has absolutely no knowledge of the industry. But, it really isn't for anyone over 30 who is considering a career change or who has been trying to break into the industry for a while now. It has common sense advice, like how to dress for an interview and networking tips. I just skipped over these chapters because this is basic stuff that you should already know in any industry. I also felt like the book is a little outdated in some areas. The map of Los Angeles was nice for anyone considering a move to LA though. Overall, it was a quick read and confirmed most of what you probably already know.

Monica McCarty has done it again! She has the innate ability to take what her imagination conjures up and to put it down on paper so realistically you feel you're right there watching everything unfold before your eyes. Her stories grab you and draw you in so completely that when the end of the book comes, it's disappointing! 😕 Why? Because you want more, and more.The two main characters, Cate and Gregor are two of my favorite characters from all of her books, but then I tend to say that about everyone of her books I read. I always fall in love with her characters......😘. This story was different from most from this series in that there was not much action pertaining to the war against England. With that said, it did not detract from the storyline or the impact the story had on me. The twist and turns in this story are few, the concentration being on Cate and Gregor. I love Cate's spunk and determination, her courage and her passion for Gregor. Gregor is strong tall and perfect, so perfect he has women dropping like flys at his feet.....flirting with him, cornering him and trying to trap "the most handsome man in Scotland." Needless to say, he's unconvinced when Cate tells him she's in love with him. She sets out to prove her love and the fun begins, with jealous women, misunderstandings, and all types of chaos! 😳. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have....happy reading! Cheers! 🍻

I’ve never read a historical romance series quite like the Highland Guard. These are not your average highland love stories. Of course, author Monica McCarty always delivers a strong, sexy alpha male, but that package includes realistically flawed yet fierce heroines, excellent writing and tons of (accurate) history that is fully integrated in every aspect of the storytelling. This includes a detailed Author’s Note at the end highlighting which historical people, places and events helped inspire or were included in the story.This series tells of Robert the Bruce’s bid for the Scottish throne and war against England for Scotland’s independence. Despite being #9 this book can easily be read stand alone, and I encourage readers who are really interested in this book without reading the others to go for it! The story is truly Gregor and Cate’s, but any pertinent information about past events and characters is easily added in the narrative without bogging it down.I read these books for the romance (which is always wonderful) as well as the overarching story of the war and to catch up with other members of the Highland Guard. I’ve been following this series since the release of the #6, The Recruit, and honestly it keeps getting better and better. I have to admit I’ve read all McCarty’s books, and while her first trilogy is high quality her improvement over time is noticeable. There will be three more books in this series. I am excited for them, but I’m also anxious to see what this talented author will choose to write next.Enough of that, on to the actual review…Readers have long-awaited the story of Gregor McGregor, the best archer in Scotland...who is also known as the most handsome man in Scotland. Or maybe we all just wanted to know what woman could possibly snare a man who can have anyone he wants. Both Gregor and Cate weren’t what I expected but I found myself loving them. Their internal motivations were fully fleshed out. Sometimes that inner monologue was a little long for my taste but it helped me understand Gregor especially, which I think was important because even as a reader it’s easy to overlook his depth in the face of all that sexiness.Cate is actually Gregor’s ward. She was 15 when her village was decimated by the English and Gregor was one of four Highland Guard members who responded in the aftermath. After fishing Cate out of a well she latches onto him. Gregor ends up bringing her home to his mother where Cate causes all sorts of problems over the years, from learning to fight like a boy to, more recently, catching Gregor’s romantic attention. So when Gregor has some time off he does what any good guardian would do and goes home to find her a husband.Cate isn’t averse to getting married...as long as that man is Gregor. She’s adored him since the moment she laid eyes on him. There are some parallels between Cate and the women who usually chase Gregor (this causes problems later on), but one of my favorite parts to this story was how clearly Cate saw him. There is definitely some hero-worship going on but she is also the only woman beside Gregor’s mother who he’s ever allowed to know him. The attraction on his end didn’t seem very genuine at the beginning but by the middle it was palpable from both sides.I basically devoured this book up until the last quarter. That’s where the angst begins. I knew the strife (the real strife anyway) in Gregor and Cate’s relationship would come sooner or later. Notwithstanding my other quibbles this was a five star read for me...until Gregor does something that made me want to chuck my Kindle at the wall. I just couldn’t get over it and it honestly knocks a whole star off my rating. Then there is another conflict concerning Cate’s true identity that, though it was a nice twist to the story, I didn’t really care for.The Arrow and the Highland Guard series really turns highland historical romance on its head. I haven’t read or heard of any other books like it. Readers get the domineering, sexy males this subgenre is so famous for, but each heroine also stands out as well. I wasn’t dying for Gregor’s story as much as other readers (I honestly thought The Striker would be next) but Monica McCarty definitely delivers.

The books in this series just keep getting better and better. This book was a bit of a departure from the other books in the sense that there wasn't as much fighting/stalking/etc. It was pretty much centered on the relationship of Gregor and Cate, and Gregor dealing with his past and being outed as a member of the Phantoms (which happened in the last book, so not a spoiler). But don't worry there was plenty of action at the end.I found Cate to be a compelling and believable heroine and enjoyed her a lot. Gregor, of course, was the quintessential broken good guy in need of all that Cate has to offer but pushing it away at the same time. That being said, the story wasn't old or overdone. It had good balance and proved believable for me.The only downside for me was I figured out the "twist" in the story from the beginning so it wasn't as much a surprise for me. That meant the events of the end didn't have the impact on me I think the author intended. But that didn't make it any less enjoyable or fun to watch Gregor squirm :)Very much looking forward to the next book! Oh- and I REALLY love how much we saw of some of the other guard members, especially Chief, Saint, Hawk, Viper etc. The guys that helped us fall in love with the series!

First I will say if you haven't read this series you are definitely missing out on an AWESOME Highland series.The Arrow is the story of Gregor and Cate. From page one I did nothing but read....the world went on around me. The author writes a believable story with historical background. I found it realistic that Gregor would be reluctant to enter into a relationship with Cate as he considered himself her guardian. I loved how strong willed and determined Cate was and didn't give up until she felt there was nothing to fight for.I've read others reviews and I have to say that I found the entire book totally realistic and true to life. Gregor has reasons for what he did...or rather 'almost' went through with. People do stupid things and they are forgiven for it. I found their story to be heartwarming and loved it from page one to the end. I'm anxiously left waiting for the next one.Alas...however I have to say that The Hawk still holds my heart in his hand... Again, if you haven't read any of the authors books I urge you to pick them up. They are the kind of books you keep forever, in a safe place where you can read them over and over again.
