The best way to start this review is to say "wow." Just "wow." This is the most engrossing, intense, and amazing book I've read in a long time. My only regret is that I didn't read it sooner.Sajer obviously fought for the Nazi's on the Eastern Front during WWII. That said, there's nary a peep of ideology in the book, either pro-Nazi or anti-communist. This is really about one man's experiences, not about what caused the war, or even what he believed when he wrote the book.The experiences themselves are stunning - frightening, but stunning. He starts off with some pretty brutal details about basic training as a young man/child - Sajer couldn't pass the test to be in the Luftwaffe, so he ended up in the infantry, first driving a truck, later as a member of the renowned Gross Deutschland division, seeing action in many of the most important battles of the Eastern Front.Sajer himself said he didn't write this book so that it could be cited by historians - the book is about experiences. And like few other authors, Sajer conveys those experiences - hunger, fatigue, hope, fear, sadness, cold. Anyone who believes that war is a glorious experience will be sadly disappointed - Sajer expends no effort to make himself into a hero, and indeed, while Sajer loves some of his comrades-in-arms, the book overall is devoid of positive energy.I haven't read All Quiet on the Western Front in a number of years, but honestly, I can't imagine it surpassing this book.There have been some criticisms of this book by reviewers who maintain it is made up. Notably, some of the critics have recanted after corresponding with Sajer, and frankly, I don't know how anyone who reads this book could imagine that it is not true.This book is an absolute must read. No doubt. Buy it now.

You might read the account of a German soldier hoping to get a first-hand account of real life “action” and “adventure.” Those who have never fought and have watched war only in the movies would make it to be a glamorous or exciting thing. You never get the account of the wrecked humanity that is left by war in those who survive it.Sajer was a mid-war French recruit who ended up a transportation soldier in the German Army and was later taken into the GrossDeutschland Infantry Division. His experience of the war was essentially, the long retreat of the Germans from the East Front. There is certainly plenty of description of the action. The fighting. The chaos. The fear. The misery .The misery of the environment (Russian winters!). But it is the thread of humanity that Sajer clings to which really ties it all together. His girlfriend whom he never saw again. His friends who fought alongside him.You get to the end of the book and are left with a vast emptiness that is the bleak reality of what war does to a human being. There is all kinds of misery, horror, and suffering, but this is the horror and suffering of this particular man, who is able to share it in poignant words that leave you with the faintest understanding of what it was like and a vast well of sympathy and hope that a man broken and wrecked by war could have some bit of life left to live. No one can understand who hasn’t been through it but Sajer does a very good job of giving us as much of a taste of the horror of war as we could possibly absorb while sitting in the comfort of our homes and reading about it.You may pick up this book to read it for a first hand account of some “action” or “adventure” but you’ll put it down with a firsthand hope for peace for a man whose humanity was pressed and tested like most people will never know.

Simply incredible! One can watch all the Hitler documentaries on TV that one wants but nothing will explain the pain and suffering of warfare in intricate detail like Forgotten Soldier. When I say "I couldn't put it down"...I truly mean it. All the pain, all the sorrow and all the bloody gore of suffering by the simple German soldier is on display here in words that only an excellent author can express. I'm a "much more than casual" student of military history and this one really got to me. Very highly recommended!

“The Forgotten Soldier” is definitely a must-read for all WW2 history buffs. I fell in love with this memoir after the first couple of pages and after finishing it I can say with all certainty that it has become one of my favorite war memoirs, if not the most favorite one. What is so special about it is that the war is shown through the eyes of an ordinary infantryman from the Wehrmacht, and a very young one on top of it. Barely seventeen years old, he’s thrown right into the hell of the Eastern Front and has to see the horrors which most of us would never imagine even in our worst nightmares. He tells about every event with incredible honesty and with so much feeling that you feel like you’re living his life, even though sometimes you wish the descriptions weren’t so vivid due to all the gore, blood and dirt. But that’s what makes this memoir so incredibly personal and sincere - Guy Sajer definitely doesn’t shy away from any subject, let it be war atrocities, animalistic fear one experiences during the offensive, death of his comrades, despair, anger, love, hatred, doubt, devotion - all of the emotions that make us all human. The vividness of it all, the details, the mood of the ordinary infantrymen like him, and even such acts of comradeship and kindness towards the enemy that are difficult to imagine in certain situations come alive with every page turned. If you love war memoirs and would love to read a firsthand account of events on the Eastern Front, read this book - I promise, you will never view Wehrmacht men in the same light. Highly, highly recommended!

About the Author

Philip Ryken is the eighth president of Wheaton College. Following his graduation from Wheaton College in 1988, he earned a master of divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary and a doctorate in historical theology from the University of Oxford.Dr. Ryken preached at Philadelphia's Tenth Presbyterian Church from 1995 until his appointment at Wheaton in 2010. He has published more than 50 books, including Reformed Expository Commentaries on 1 Kings, Luke, Galatians, and 1 Timothy. He teaches the Bible weekly on the broadcast Every Last Word and serves as a board member for the Lausanne Movement, the National Association of Evangelicals, the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities, and The Gospel Coalition.

Of further note is an excellent guide to names from "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". Considering the hobbitish interest in geneaologies, nomenclature and familiy trees, this index is indispensible.This hobbit highly endorses this book.

Professor Jared Lobdell has, in this volume, collected a number of excellent critical essays relating to the writing of JRR Tolkien, one of the most interesting being Bonniejean Christenson's excellent work "Gollum's Character Transformation in 'The Hobbit'" (Note: not every essay is necessarily worthy of 5 stars!).Professor Lobdell has also provided an informative introduction, and a Guide to Names which will prove helpful to Tolkien scholars.It's a shame that this volume is out of print. Serious Tolkien scholars will wish to find a used copy.

Wonderful images from lantern slides taken by an amazing lady - Mary T.S Schaffer. The text is equally captivating. My hat's off to this important historical and artistic book. I hope to retrace her steps someday with my Pony Premo 6 4x5 camera and imagine what it was like in the Canadian Rockies more than 100 years ago.

It took me hours to get this wrapped. I couldn't stop looking at it. What an absolutely beautiful book! It's divided into sections for different types ofrocks. Who knew there are this many? We're learning so much from it.

My 7 year old son is very interested in gems and rocks, and this book is big and beautiful! Very colorful photos, interesting information but not too dense for us to read together. He has loved looking at all the gems, and it has made me want to start collecting as well!

This book is absolutely amazing. This is coming from a mom that owns HUNDREDS of children books ranging from baby through those "young adult" books that grown ups are loving. We have a lot of educational books on various subjects. My kids are really into rocks these days so for Christmas I added this & another book that looked promising to our 'library.' Both books are incredible. They arrived looking brand new (which was a miracle after how the box itself looked). Both books were clearly made very well. Absolutely a high quality product! The pictures are filled with pictures & offer a perfect reading aide. And the reading material is wonderful. The books are formated so well that my first grade spent a whole hour looking through them both (we are lucky if we get five minutes usually) after he had already been through them several times. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering it.

Lots of great photos and easy to understand information about all kinds of rocks, fossils, and gems. We keep it out as a "coffee table book" and my 11 year old budding geologist enjoys paging through it. Also a great summer learning activity without feeling like it's school!!

This is a great first book on the rocks and gems. I have been so interested in the rocks, minerals and gems out there that make beautiful jewelry. I have some jewelry made with rocks and gems that I have never heard of before. Example-- magnesite and unakite. Ladies, Google it and you can learn about them. This book has great illustrations and is easy to read. I recommend it for rock hounds.

Geology is definitely a personal passion.I bought this book originally for my niece for Christmas to go with a rocks and minerals set I also got. Great books. My eight years old boys love the series. Glossy pages with colorful pictures straight from the game. Tons of writing in the book (unlike the other "minecraft diaries" with sparse writing).

First of all, I am horrified at the reasons for the one star reviews. Isn't it possible to get reviews like that (by people who have not even read the book!) removed? I went and marked them all as inappropriate, because it is unfathomable to me that people decided not only was this book not worth $1, but CubeKid should be "punished" for his impetuous and irrational choice to not offer this book as KindleUnlimited. Bah!I didn't come across book 8 when it was not a KindleUnlimited offering, but if I had, I would have happily paid $1 for it. Geez, one-star-review-people--this is quality writing and if he wants to actually charge money for it, is that a crime? CubeKid, I'm sure those reviews get under your skin. How utterly unappreciative of all your hard work! Don't let them. They are the minority, I'm sure. I'd like to think most of your readers don't throw hissy fits.Okay, on to the actual book and the reason for my five star rating. CubeKid was witty, engaging in his writing and grammatically sound in book 8, which is always true, but it is especially impressive this round for cranking out such a fast story (and wow, it really was fast!). As always, my kids (Katie and Ben! ;)) loved it and I enjoyed reading it to them. Any publishing houses contact you yet? I mentioned my thoughts on this in my review on book six, and I still think that your overall story arc has excellent potential to be picked up and republished (depending on copyright infringement issues), or you might just be contacted to write something else. (Are you easy for them to contact?)Good luck, CubeKid. Steady on, and no worries--you have a gift, and it will shine through and pay off in the end. Okay, so I'm a reading girl, I can read 978 page books in 4 days, I usually read from 8pm-11pm, on vacation I read from 7pm-2am. I read a LOT. Unfortunately, after receiving this book today my son immediately started reading it and within a few minutes pages started falling out. He loves the story but is super upset about the pages falling out. Given the price of this book I'm pretty perturbed that it hasn't even withstood 30 minutes of reading.
