By giving Bill Bryson 3 stars, I feel like I am committing a heresy but I've thought about it long and hard and 3 stars is all this book warrants. I love Bill Bryson's writing, especially his travel writing, but this book is just not up to his standard. It feels like it was thrown together simply as a money-making exercise. There is no underlying thread to the book, there is no journey. It's a series of day trips to places he would have been going to anyway. The underlying theme is supposed to be the "Bryson line" but he barely refers to it after the first few pages and the only places he really visits along the line are the two ends. Most of the other places are nowhere near the line. He also includes a lot of material from other books, either it was in the book or it was stuff he had left over after finishing the book. I'm sorry Bill, you can do (and have done) better than this.

Bill Bryson may be wearing out his welcome. My English friends call him "Bryson the Curmudgeon." Unhappy with the US, he becomes a UK citizen and spends his time in rapture over the countryside and scathing about the people. This follow-on to Notes from a Small Island becomes what PT Barnum warned about: "Never follow an elephant act with another elephant act." In places Bryson is dead-on accurate. I know because I've visited some of the same out of the way places and pubs. But in other places he's simply mean. Maybe it's creeping age.

A very good opening and close were largely out of synch with the rest of the tone of the book. I have read and enjoyed many of the author's books beginning with Notes From a Small Island which I purchased at a small independent bookstore in Manchester England. Time has not mellowed the author, I did not find him to be a "playful curmudgeon" but rather too often being a grumpy old man. I also thought that someone who has so much respect for the English language could find other ways to voice displeasure rather than curse words and foul language. It's unfortunate that so many interesting observations about his adopted home have to be tainted in this way. It makes his apparent affection for the place expressed in the last few pages less believable, or maybe understandable.

I've greatly enjoyed many of Bill Bryson's prior works, but this one left me concerned about the drift to curmudgeonly thinking from focusing on what he doesn't like more than what is likable.Also, often politics enters many of Bill's books but never to this extent. The section on immigration Bill, sadly, embraced a straw man argument to stake out a position no one disagrees with.Being a logical person myself, seeing this descent into the illogical abyss left me wishing I had read a different book.Still, it's got 2 stars because there was a lot of interesting information. I've made 6 trips to the UK and I was often taking a new tidbit of info Bill exposed then looking up more information.My wife is determined to see the Ridley Mounds described in the books. I wonder what future generation will completely misinterpret the structure. This begs the question of how much guessing do we do looking at the many ancient structures. Was it really a super religious site, or someone's fanciful whim, or something in between.I just found it hard to enjoy the fun information combined with the straw man arguments pushing a liberal perspective yet at the same time bashing the actions of liberal government.

On the one hand he is a very funny and entertaining writer; no one can make me laugh out loud while reading the way he can. Also, he is so compelling in his praise and vivid in his descriptions; I really want to visit the places about which he writes.On the other hand, the angry old man stuff gets tiring. His liberal use of the word "idiot" evidences a real inner anger he ought to get under control. A poor government worker just doing their job by enforcing a rule isn't just wrong in Bill's eyes; he is an idiot...some lower being to be scorned for doing his job. It is an attitude the author has, and it is both tiring and troubling.I finally figured it out, though. I love travel because of the people on the way that I meet. Bill loves travel despite the people on the way that he meets.

I am going to preface this review by saying that I have a general disdain for graphic novels. There was a time that I would never elect to read one of my own volition. That all changed when I was assigned Maus for an English class. Upon hearing that our syllabus included a graphic novel, I groaned in tacit protest. I read both volumes of Maus cover to cover before the assigned completion date, and was very moved by the story, which is about a son trying to understand his Holocaust-survivor father. There are no images of humans in this book--the Jews are portrayed as mice, the Nazis as cats, and the Poles as pigs. The protagonist has always felt a void between he and his father, but develops some understanding and compassion as he begins interviewing him about his experiences in the Holocaust. In terms of Holocaust literature, I would deem this a "must-read".

Browsing through the reviews and comments about Maus, I saw that there was some question as to whether the hardcover edition comprised Parts I and II. This is understandable because the product is listed in Amazon as "The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale (No 1)," which seems contradictory.When I was considering purchasing it, I looked at the number of pages that were listed for the edition and guessed that it included both parts of the story. So I bought it, it arrived fine, and I am now writing to confirm that yes, this edition includes I and II.Amazon should look into this and remove the "(No 1)" from the listing's title.

I rarely read graphic novels or comics, but found this a very interesting read. The author has found a very clever way to write a feature-length comic-book novel, telling an accessible mini-history of his father's experiences during the WWII Holocaust in Poland (his father and mother being survivors of the camps), intermingled with a second "current-day" story line illustrating his father's current domestic challenges and the author's own, sometimes fraught relationship with him.The story is extremely easy to understand and follow when laid out this way, even though I already knew most of this from a more general historical perspective. Showing different nationalities as different animals is a clever way to help keep the players straight.I strongly disagree with the criticism leveled by other reviewers that try to assign some significance to the animals chosen for each nationality, My own belief is that the only choice meant to convey any real meaning was that of showing Jewish characters as mice and Nazis as cats, illustrating the relative "power" that the cats had over the mice, and the fact that the "mice" were always being hunted and could not even safely walk on streets where there were "cats." The one or two French were shown as frogs, the Americans were dogs, and the Poles were pigs. Those who believe the author somehow intended any of these to be broader comments on those nationalities, for better or worse, are just reading too much into it. In particular, showing Poles as pigs was not intended to be an insult, and those who think otherwise are just looking for reasons to be offended.Some of the comic illustrations were very inventive. At some points in the story, the author's father is walking around in Poland amongst the general population (outside the Jewish ghetto, that is), and acting as though he belongs there, knowing that it will not be easy to tell he is Jewish if he acts like he belongs there; in effect, he is "masquerading" as a Pole, and the cartoons of these scenes show him with a pig mask over his normally mouse face, showing that he is passing for a Pole.Certainly nothing about the Holocaust is anything to laugh at, and in fact, in most treatments on the subject, too much detail can sometimes overwhelm a reader. The author suspends his father's narrative at regular intervals and cuts to their present-day conversation, where they talk about his father's domestic situation, his health, his personal frugality and other habits, etc. This is a mini-drama all my itself that at times can almost be amusing, and gives the reader a periodic break from the heavier part of the story. You can also see how certain ways that his father behaves have been influenced by his experience.This is a interesting way to learn about a part of history that too many these days seem to be strangely unaware of. (When I was growing up, everyone knew about this.) It is easily read and understood, and even at almost 300 pages, I read it in less than a day.

One man's story of how he and his wife survived the Holocaust told in graphic novel format; and another story of a man (the author) and his difficult and contentious relationship with his father (the surviving man).The senior Spiegelman's story, as told to the author, his son, is cleverly and uniquely told after many years have passed. During the times the father recounts his, and his wife's, life in Poland and in Auschwitz, I almost felt like I was there. Touching, frightening and revealing this is one of those books that should be required reading in our educational system. As time goes by, and more and more concentration camp survivors pass away, I fear that the story of man's greatest inhumanity to man will also pass away. The story of the Holocaust, the people, the unbelievable circumstances that allowed it to happen, is something that must not be forgotten. The saying "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" is very true and the thought of this happening again is unfathomable.We, the human race, have had other similar events happen more recently; Rwanda, Cambodia's Killing Fields, and so on are not as publicized as the Holocaust but they are just as horrible. Those stories need to be added to ones like Maus to show that these things can, and will, happen if we don't take steps to stop them. Knowledge is the key and this book is one tool in our toolbox of knowledge. Experience it and NEVER FORGET.

I have been meaning to get this book and its sequel for many years. I bought it recently for my grandson and read both books before giving it to him. This is a very personal account of the holocaust. The members of my family who survived all left in the mid thirties. None of the rest survived, so this description of what it was like inside the area of German control was a first for me. As a graphic novel, this is a complex art form combining visual and verbal components. I'm not a comic book fan, nor did I read many when I was a child. But I found this format intriguing. I learned a lot and the format stimulated a lot of thinking.

Great book, w/high quality, detailed photos and explaination. Deals almost entirely with the stearing and suspension system. It goes over the various ways to "slam" the bus, raise it up, or just keep it stock. If you're a bus "daily driver", then this is defenitely an asset that will make you understand what all is going on down below.

Ups: great photography, high quality paper stock, well-organized.Downs: Limited focus, slightly dated info [2003 pub. date, so info is a good decade+ old by now (2011)], UK specific parts suppliers may or may not be still in business or available elsewhere.This title is basically broken down by front & rear, with the focus on upgrades to the suspension & brakes. Not much in here otherwise, but the various options are presented in a "case study" format, so it has some appeal even if you aren't interested in doing such work yourself, just so you can speak knowledgeably with someone you hire to do the job.I don't own a VW bus anymore, but have been suffering some nostalgia for my old Splittie, so the book was an interesting read for me, with its presentation of all the options of modifications I didn't have money for back in the day! So even if you're just interested in these old cars, it's worth checking out, altho' if you don't want to lower your VW bus, then there isn't much reason to buy it: most of the focus is on lowered "California look" VW Transporters [with only a small amount of info on raising them for the off-road set.]So there you have it: other sources focus on the motor, this one is all about the springy bits.

After being a juvenile probation officer a long time ago, I have seen the dishearteningly cruel childhoods that some have had to endure. Often, those children never find a way out or find anyone who truly cares about them much less someone to love them.Jessie and Jordan’s story of adopting a sibling group of five reveals the tragic damage that many children are left with after abuse and neglect. Jessie is also, however, able to show God’s work and the impact that hope and love can have on a child (or children) that desperately need help.It is also an eye opening story of the dedication, hard work, and persistence it takes to be a good parent to children coming from traumatic backgrounds.I highly recommend this book to anyone considering adoption or anyone who would like a glimpse into a world often hidden from view.Thank you Jessie for telling your story and letting all of us into your lives.

It's been along time since I was so immersed in a book, every spare moment I was sneaking in reading this heartfelt story. I went through every emotion imaginable alongside the author, from tears to laughter, and everything in between. Truly eye opening into her world of adopting a sibling group, the struggles, successes, failures, joy, love, & Faith. Honest & inspiring, I would recommend this book to anyone.

I read this book because I have several friends who are foster parents/adoptive parents. I'm so glad I read it, because I feel like it gives me a better understanding of what they go through. I hope by reading this book, I can now be a better support system for my friends. The book pulled me in immediately. I couldn't put it down! Their story is eye-opening and inspiring. I like that it's very honest. I hope she writes a second book because I'd love to read more stories about their family and find out how things work out in the future.

This was an inspiring story of one family's journey to adoption. It was a clear look into the processes and challenges in foster care and adoption. Full of insights for all parents and anyone supporting a family in this process.

This book really opened my eyes to what a difference adoption can make. While I read the book I felt myself going through all the different emotions that the author was dealing with which says a lot about the tone and descriptions it is written with. This book is so much more than just for families or people looking to adopt. Yes, it gave me a better understanding of this families process but gave me some things to think about as I parent my own children.

This book is such an insightful read! I really appreciate how the author shares all her stories- the bad , the good, and all the “say what” moments. It is very interesting to get a behind the scenes look into the process of adoption and all that goes into starting a new life as a new family. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of going through the adoption process or is just curious to know what it is like from someone who has experienced it. It was an honest depiction and you can’t help but feel the emotions of the author through her story telling. On a sidenote- What a joy that this sibling group was brought back together by such life changing parents!

Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy is a collection of short stories or novellas that delve deeper into the Shadow World. It follows Simon’s time at Shadowhunter Academy but is rife with additional fascinating information. Overall, it is a highly entertaining installment in the Shadowhunter Chronicles and I would definitely recommend that you read it prior to the Dark Artifices series. Please do not read this review if you have not yet read the Infernal Devices or the Mortal Instruments series as there will be plot points mentioned.The first novella is Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy, where Simon decides that he wants to become a Shadowhunter. After losing his memories, Simon must decide who he wants to be – a mundane that does not remember the Shadow World or a future Shadowhunter that may regain some of his memories. He meets a collection of students, both Shadowhunter and mundane that will be with him for the next two years as they train to become proper Shadowhunters. Although we know these characters for less time than those we’ve grown to love in the other series, they are still likable and well-developed. Over the course of the two years that the novellas take place, each character learns what it means to be a Shadowhunter, to be loyal to their friends, and to not always take the Law at face value (thanks to Simon’s incessant dialogues that Downworlders are not lesser people.) Of course, we’ve loved Simon since we met him in the Mortal Instruments but this was a great series of stories that allowed us to get to know him better (even though he was missing his memories).The second is The Lost Herondale, in which we learn more about the beliefs of the Shadowhunters. Deserting your fellow Shadowhunters is considered the worst thing that you can do – so the punishment is severe. This novella tells us the story of Tobias Herondale and shows Simon that not every story is as black and white as it may be presented. We also learn that Catarina Loss, Magnus’ friend and current teacher at Shadowhunter Academy, saved Tobias’ child – which means that there may be a lost Herondale in the world. This plot line is mentioned first in the Mortal Instruments and pursued more in the Dark Artifices, so that is one reason why I believe this series of novellas should be read prior to beginning Lady Midnight.The third is the Whitechapel Fiend, in which Tessa comes to Shadowhunter Academy to teach a lesson. It was lovely to see more of our favourite characters from the Infernal Devices, especially because this was a later period in time than the books so we got a glimpse into their future lives. The fourth is Nothing but Shadows, which chronicles James Herondale’s time at the Academy. It made me miss the Infernal Devices and impatient for the next series that Cassandra Clare will be writing featuring the children we got glimpses of.The fifth is The Evil We Love and a tale from the time of Valentine’s Circle. The Circle’s history is considered a dark time and infrequently talked about in the series. Most Shadowhunters who were involved are either ashamed of their actions and largely refuse to talk about it, or dead. It’s always fascinating to see what the power and influence of a charismatic leader can get people to do. Simon learns that he knows better than to just go along with the crowd and speaks out against ideas that he doesn’t agree with. It makes him even more likable as a character because I’m sure we all have experienced times when we disagreed with someone we cared about and how difficult it might be not to just follow their lead.The sixth is Pale Kings and Princes, which creates some foundation for the world we will experience in the Dark Artifices. We learn how Mark and Helen Blackthorn came to be, with their half-faerie lineage. It is a heart-wrenching tale and makes you question the harshness of the Cold Peace. Helen is no longer trusted, and essentially banished, because of her heritage and that action fractures her entire family – as the Blackthorn parents were murdered during the War. Helen was willing to take care of her family, but she was torn away and those kinds of wounds will certainly affect the characters of the Dark Artifices in the future.The seventh is Bitter of Tongue essentially just reiterates the point that Downworlders are not lesser beings than mundanes or Shadowhunters. We get to see more of the Blackthorn clan, the utterly repulsive treatment of the half-fae children Mark and Helen, and a lovely wedding.The eighth is The Fiery Trial, in which Simon and Clary are asked to serve at witnesses for Julian and Emma’s parabatai ceremony. The story focuses more on the relationship between Simon and Clary than Julian and Emma but it was nice to see the ceremony. Jace and Alec became parabati prior to the Mortal Instruments, so until now, we had not seen the ceremony performed. It also made Simon and Clary evaluation their own friendship and the depth of their connection.The ninth is Born to Endless Night and revolves around the beloved Malec, as well as Magnus Banes short tenure at Shadowhunter Academy. The character development shown in this novella was a culmination of Alec’s experiences throughout the Mortal Instruments and how he grew as a person. While not confident and cocky like Jace, he had become secure in his own skin and learned to love (romantically). It was the most normal of the novellas, showing a behind-the-scenes type look into the lives of our favourite Mortal Instruments characters.The final novella in the collection is Angels Twice Descending in which Simon and the other mundanes of the Academy have their Ascension. Simon must decide whether he is ready to face the risks, to give up his mundane life and embrace the dangers and responsibility of being a Shadowhunter. It was a beautiful wrap up to the series, allowing Simon the time to explore the life he was leaving behind and the family that he was gaining. As I mentioned before, I would highly recommend reading this series of novellas as it only enhances the Shadowhunter experience (and deepens the world).

I have read every one of her books. And still I go back and read them over again. This world that she has created is absolutely undeniably a world that I could live in. Perhaps that's why I read the books over and over. I also have her movies and audiobooks. And I am addicted to the TV series. Thank you Cassandra Clare for sharing the talents which you possess with others like myself.

When Cassandra Clare shares the authorship , I seem to like them less. The writing is disjoined and drolls on. The end was very nice and could have been wonderful. I won't risk another of these mishmash titles, although I LOVED the original series.

I enjoyed it because it gave told what was happening with Simon but it also included some history from other characters from the other 2 series. I like knowing what happened to all those others and why. It would be nice to get more.I received the book promptly and it was as promised.

Although I enjoyed having a story where Simon is the central character, many of the vignettes felt disconnected from the premise of the book, which was the training of new shadow hunters. Some of these read like fan fiction; cute but they did nothing to advance the story. This book worked best when it centered around Simon and the trials he and his new friends face in the road to ascension. Loved-hated the surprise ending.

I was never much of a reader. I would start a book and either never finish it or it would just take me forever to get through it. I started with the City of Bones a few years ago and have been hooked ever since. I read all six books in less than 3 months (City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls, and City of Heavenly Fire) I have recently completed the Infernal Devices trilogy and am now reading The Dark Artifices series starting with Lady Midnight.

I enjoyed reading about Simon's escapades as he learns to become a shadowhunter. I've loved all of the shadowhunter books and these short stories lets you get a glimpse at some of the characters from the various books. I prefer the mortal instruments, dark artifices and infernal devices books but this was still an enjoyable read.

After I finished the Mortal Instruments, I didn't know whether this book was worth buying with it being written with other writers in short stories. I went on to read "Lady Midnight" and then finally decided to go ahead and purchase this book. I'm glad I did because it answered some questions I had after reading "Lady Midnight".I am disappointed that it didn't include "text to speech" though.

Good but the hand-drawn maps inside were too hard to follow. I'm all for artistic sketches, but prefer maps to be less artistic. Cleanly drafted maps would be a big improvement.

What a wonderful book, this beautifully illustrated guide is highly recommended. It's even lovely to evoke Cairo before and after your trip.

This is the very best first guide to Islamic Cairo that I have found, and I own quite a few. It basically describes an essential walk down Al Mu'iz Street from Bab El Futuh (and Al Hakim Mosque) in the north of Fatimid Cairo, through Bab Zuwela in the south and further to Al Hassan Mosque at the foot of the Citadel. The length of the walk is about 2.5 kilometers and is comparable to that from The Times Square to Washington Square Park in Manhattan, or from the Arc de Triomphe to the Louvre in Paris.How long will take you to make that walk? Well, it took me more than 6 full days to finish the first kilometer (from Bab El Futuh to Khan El Khalili) and the rest of the walk will have to wait to a future visit. Things are complicated by the innumerable alleyways that branch off the main walk and that I found impossible to resist venturing into. In that sense, the walk described in the book is only a backbone, but an essential one. There is an incredible number of monuments to see in this part of Cairo and the book is only an introduction (and an excellent one at that) to a very rich part of a 1500 year old city.

My wife and I used this book in 2002 to explore Islamic Cairo. It's a well-written, extremely user-friendly guide to the gems of Fatimid architecture hidden in the alleys and warrens of one of the world's most fascinating cities. A must-read, but also a must-use! Put on your walking shoes, take a quick gulp of cane juice and head off into Cairo.

I love reading and reviewing books that friends have written. It's amazing to the see time, effort, and energy that is put into writing a book and then the result is a book like this!Together, Mark DeVries and Annette Safstrom have taken what was started in Sustainable Youth Ministry and turned it over, flipped it upside down, turned it inside out, and produced a version that was specific for children's ministry. While reading Sustainable Children's Ministry, you get a sense of who Annette Safstrom is, her journey in ministry, and begin to feel like you are in trenches of a children's program right in your own church. It's an eye-opening review of why things are and are not working in your own children's ministry.However, that's not the goal of the book. The end result of the book is suggestions and resources to help address those challenges with wild success. This is now the greatest resource book for assessing your children's ministry and belongs on the bookshelves of every church.

There are so many golden nuggets in this book! I loved Safstrom's stories in that they were honest in the challenges she faced and mistakes she made in ministry. Helps me to know I'm not the only one! This book is bursting with pragmatic solutions that are presented in a way that's easy to understand and can be implemented right away. Even though the changes DeVries and Safstrom suggest will take time, those in ministry will see that it's worth the investment to work toward sustainable solutions instead of scrambling at the last minute. Short chapters make this an easy read. Everybody in ministry - not just children's ministry - should have this book in their toolbox.
