I bought this book, shortly after seeing the movie "Young Victoria" with Emily Blunt....the movie had inspired me to learn more about the life of Queen Victoria. Therefore, I bought this book and was not disappointed. This book is in chronological order and gives great backgrounds on all the Royal members & staff involved in Queen Victoria's life (eg: her mother, her deceased father, her uncle, her maids and governess, etc...).The book also describes the meeting of Pr.Albert and how the courtship went along.Then the book describes all the children that The Queen and Pr. Albert had together, and what happened in their own lives.All this information is written with lovely photographs, so that the reader can see what the actual people (mentioned) really looked like.I love this book and it will remain in my own Library for years to come since it is such a wonderful REFERENCE book.

I wasn't looking for or expecting an encyclopedia style book. Plus, for a new book, the binding shouldn't be coming apart.

I felt like this book was just ok. It was actually very depressing. The town was depressing, family that doesn't act like family, the thing with the sister, the thing with the brother. I didn't dislike Mercy, but I didn't love her either. Her character just didn't stand out. I don't know how to explain it. Not standoffish but something. I guess it's because of the way she was raised. I can understand that, but I still didn't like it or warm up to her. Unfortunately, there was no loving in this book except a couple of little kisses.The thing with Levi made no sense to me. He seemed bright so his secret seemed ridiculous.The stuff with Rose was hard to take and it was way too much!!! Good grief it was WAY too much. Grrr, it's hard writing this without spoilers but the story seem to fall apart during this time because of the Levi issue. It just didn't make sense that there are things that he knows, yet waits hours to say anything.Anyway I didn't care for it. I will probably give the next book a try just because I usually love this author's books. Right now I feel like I need to go read something to get myself out of this depressing mood.

The story was just "ok". There were just too many soft spots in the way the investigation went. The interviews of witnesses was weak. I could think of at least 10 other questions that should have been asked and I'm certainly not in law enforcement. I couldn't really love the main character either. She was supposed to be tough but was usually crying or shaking . Also, there was no real detective work. They just sort of fell into every clue. What FBI agent would yell from the driveway "hello, anyone home" toward the house you think a murder suspect and his hostage are in? Probably won't read the next in the series.

The author was doing fine, introducing her characters and their backgrounds and developing a decent whodunit. Then all her main characters, including cops and FBI agents (for pete's sake) developed stomach issues and weak knees every time something even vaguely surprising or threatening occurred. From the halfway point on virtually every chapter had someone with "knees turned to jello" or instant acid reflux of some sort. That, combined with the bodice ripping style of writing about the increasing romantic involvement of the two main characters, made for an unintentionally humorous ending.

This was a fantastic book I would have gladly paid $15 for. It has great character development, well thought out plot and writing, and good twists and turns. I love that the strong woman character could still have a softer side eventually. I am so sick of reading other books with a woman as the main character who never gets hurt or barely shows emotion until book 7 haha! This had such a great balance that it felt more realistic. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be buying the second book immediately!! Great job Kendra Elliot!

Lately, I've been bogged down with books that are oh-so-simplistic, what with the torrent of folks self-publishing. Many of those writers are great, of course - but some books I encounter could've been written...far better...to put it kindly. This is NOT one of those. It is smartly-adapted, with excellent character development to match the fast-paced story at hand. I am going to purchase and download the second Special Agent Mercy Kirkpatrick novel immediately!!! 👍💯👌❤️

It takes quite an author for me to drop everything and read with no breaks. This was my first foray into Mercy Kilpatrick’s world and it most certainly won’t be my last. Great character development, interesting storyline. I felt drawn into this world right from the start. Now I’m off to start book 2!

Stumbled on this book and its author, and I was pleasantly surprised. An especially good deal at just a few dollars! I'm from the country, so I understood the gun-toting, anti government, hillbilly mentality of the folks in Eagle's Nest. I enjoyed the writing style and slow character building. The romance between main characters was sweet and fairly realistic. I hope the next book gets a little steamier and goes deeper into that love story. I agree with another reviewer that the weakest part of the book is finding out who "dunnit" and why. I was looking for a larger twist! I read only a few chapters every night and had to keep reminding myself where I left off during that part. The best thing about the book is the strong, independent voice of Mercy -- a woman who is successful in her own write but still struggles with her past and the fears that can hold you back.

I'm white, male, and have very little understanding or appreciation for black culture. My parents and siblings all watched Roots when I was about 8 years old. I encountered some black sailors when I was in the U.S. Navy - in fact, I had a roommate for six months or so that was a black male, but we maybe spoke a hundred words during that time. This book came recommended by a quasi-stranger, not for it's content but for its structure: letters from a father to a son. I'd mentioned that I was interested in writing that sort of book, and this was a resulting recommendation. I read a few reviews before buying it. Not the sort of book I'd otherwise pick up. After ordering it, I heard the author on NPR - without knowing it was the author of the book, mind you - and I thought "wow, this guy is really interesting, provocative, well-spoken, intellectually sound, and speaks from a world that I can only see from afar." So when the show host said his name, I knew I had to pick up the book and read it soon. I had that opportunity within days, on a flight to Atlanta, my first visit there in maybe fifteen years. I got through about 110 pages on the flight and it was perfect timing. Atlanta is a sea of black compared to most everywhere I've lived. Instantly, I could try and appreciate my surroundings in way that I'd never been able to before. Did I feel "white guilt"? Sure. I do. I've seen racism my whole life, especially toward black. This book, however, did much more than rekindle strong feelings of being a winner of Powerball proportions in the life lottery. It challenged me so fundamentally and starkly in a way that I have never been challenged, reading a book, in my life. At times I felt compelled to put the book down, that it was just conjuring up too much weight of history that I wanted to put back out of sight. But I kept going. Finishing it, I felt, like apparently many others do, that this should be required reading for every American. Even those outside of the USA will benefit from it, as it will certainly illuminate the tension and schizophrenia and contradictions and rewritten history of our country. I hope Mr. Coates continues writing until he draws his final breath.

Like many of the one- and two- star reviewers of this book, I bristled at certain passages in Between the World and Me. I felt attacked and blamed at times, because I, in Ta-Nehisi Coates' words, "believe that I am white." So I understand the scorn directed at this book by many who dismiss it as divisive and simplistic in its assessment of the black experience in America.But here's the thing: this book isn't about me. It's not trying to tell me what I should do to be a better person or make me feel guilty about things I don't even understand, much less control. It's not trying to fix anything. And if you're reading it that way, I think you're missing a profound experience.I've never been shown and made to understood the experience of a life so unlike my own as I have with this book. I felt the frustration and fear that Mr. Coates felt growing up black in America. I felt the anger he feels at people who believe that they are white dismissing that experience as so many sour grapes. I felt the hypocrisy of being told not to wear hoodies or play loud music for fear of someone breaking your body.That's why this book matters. It's not a solution to our race problems or an accurate assessment of the progress of America as a nation. It is not a book about white people and how we should change. It is simply a powerful testament of one man's experience, and an offering of understanding.I grew up rich, white and privileged in suburban Virginia. I never had to think about my safety, my future or my pride through the lens of my race. I couldn't even begin to conceive of that experience. Ta-Nehisi Coates is the first person to break through that reality of my upbringing and allow me to step into another experience for a little while.It was life-changing and important.

I absolutely LOVED this book. I was taken in by the story of the author's attempt to set up a self-funding historical estate. I found the detailed background and history of Sissinghurst even more engaging. The writing of this book is probably the best prose I've ever read. So elegant yet very readable. I can guarantee, if you enjoy reading sublject matter like this, you will LOVE this book!

I've long been a fan of Sissinghurst as a garden and I've visited it. I have delved into its history and the biographies of the owners, Vita Sackville-West and Nigel Nicolson. This book, by their grandson, is an amazing realization of the languished potency of the manor of Sissinghurst--not only the garden at the center, but the surrounding farms. It shows that sustainable practices can have good economic impact. It's a rich source of information about the property and it's very well written, so it is a pleasure to read.

An inspiring journey in history of a place and the people attached to it. A lesson in adaptation and standing firm for an idea. Like a highly refined version of the reality television show "Survivor" with different tribes, strategies, and agendas. Instructive on many levels from personal to global. A pleasure to discover.

This is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I liked it. I think the first chapter is the best most moving description of a lovely childhood that I have ever read! You've got to like history of place to like the rest, but if you do, you'll like this book.

The author did his homework to describe the once lovely Sissinghurst castle and grounds and to illustrate his passion for its restoration. However, it is definitely of more interest to students of English history and geography.

I love Adam Nicolson books. He writes honestly and wonderfully researched, in depth and then well told. It shows us the connectedness between past, present and future. A wonderful read !

This beautifully written history of the world that was and is Sissinghurst over hundreds of years is intriguing. I enjoyed getting a look look at the talented and complex Nicolson family including Adam Nicolson's grandmother, Lady Nicolson, Vita Sackville-West.

This book is an amazing history that pulls together all the background information that helped the author bring Sissinghurst back to being a working estate. In areas it is a difficult/slow read, but I found the information to be very interesting.
