I really love this small book. The pictures let you write your own story. Who owns the bike with the full size rocking horse or black raven on the handle bar, and who attached an old vaccum cleaner as a tailpipe? Who secures a 3lb, 15yr old bike with a 50lb chain? The beautiful photography, design, and writing showcase the quirky, weird underside that makes New Orleans unique.

This small scale but very heady book published by the always excellent firm of Mark Batty Publisher is not only an entertaining, beautifully designed and produced series of images of bicycles, but it is also a cultural study of a city antiquarian in nature and hanging on to a rich past by its fingertips. Photographers and writers Nicholas Costarides and Mary Richardson wandered this great mecca for bohemians for a year and a half - before Katrina's heinous visitation - falling in love with the city's preoccupation with the bicycle, the primary mode of transportation in this flat and poverty stricken lady of a city. They discovered that not only were bicycles a proven means of peripatetic survival but that they also became symbols for the people who owned them, people whose pride and idiosyncrasies flavor the appearance of these timeworn bi-pedals, releasing torrents of information and fantasy to the searching eye and mind.Mary Richardson opens the book with a comment 'On Spinning Wheels' which reads like an extended poem. It's remarkable how writing which can seem dry and dead on the printed page can come alive in the voice of a professional actor. That's certainly the case with this play. I never liked "Richard III" in reading it; it was only when I heard this stellar performance that I really appreciated it as great drama.

A good representation of Cohen's earlier work; none of his later stuff. Bare-bones treatment of the songs, which are scored for piano (guitar chords are also shown, but not tablature), and the right hand faithfully carries the melody. The flavor of the songs is captured (at least the ones I've played), the chords and chord changes are correct, but you may feel a need to embellish. I consider myself an intermediate player and can sight-read these songs easily, as they're scored. But most of the songs, though the earliest arrangement were simple indeed, are really too simple for piano. An acoustically recorded, guitar-based song does not translate, without some thought and care, into a good piano arrangement, and a lot of the songs could be (and at this price, should be) fleshed out for piano. It appears to me that this songbook was more or less slapped together for commercial purposes, and I think that a lot of Cohen's poetry and music deserve better than this.

My friend loved it except she wished it had the background story of each song

This anthology is perfect for anyone who loves Leonard Cohen's work. It has the music for Vocal, Piano and Guitar. I couldn't ask for more. Great!

But that's OK. You can't have too much or too little Leonard. It is interesting to see his choice of key and the jazz sound he produces. Take a song that is very simple musically and surround it with jazz of some complexity -- really a musical and lyrical paradox. The man is great. If you have a chance to see him and his band (with stellar vocal backup) take it. One of the best concerts I have seen in years. The book is arbitrary in its selection of songs -- mostly early -- but hey, this is Leonard. You will love it.

The book was repetitive and the printing was both large/bold and standard which made it difficult to read. The concepts covered have been covered in other books. I read it in two nights thinking there would be something new but there wasn't. When I finished I felt as if the book was an advertisement for his products and services. Sure enough, the last few pages explain what you can order and where. Anyway, the book is collecting dust.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a huge fan of Beatriz Williams; I have read all of her books, and the most recent one is always my new favorite. The Summer Wives did not disappoint...it's my new favorite! I think what I enjoy most about the writing is the conversational tone. I almost feel like I'm there and a part of it. This book had everything I enjoy in a book...a little mystery, a little romance, great storytelling, and an ending that kept me on the edge of my seat! No spoilers here, but I had suspected something about Miranda and was so happy I was right!

This is a beautifully written story. I loved the richly drawn characters especially Miranda. She's a newcomer to the Island. It's here that she learns about love and life. The Islanders and the Summer people each follow their own set if rules. I was fascinated by the ridged structure of Society here. Winthrop Island is beautiful but it's secrets are ugly. The murder of Hugh Fisher is a case in point. Joseph Vargo was convicted of the crime but Miranda knew he couldn't kill anyone. I was enthralled by her. She's a fighter. She won't be stopped until she succeeds. Her story is entwined with that of her stepsister, Isobel. They are completely different personalities. Beatriz Williams wrote a wonderful story. I was drawn in and I couldn't put the book down. The ending was sweet and touching. It left me wanting more. The Summer Wives is a must read.

While this may not win an influential literary prize, this book by Beatriz Williams is incredibly entertaining and will likely keep you up reading well past your bedtime. Beautifully written and brilliantly plotted, this is one of those books that will stay with you long after you finish the last page.This is the story of two very different women—Bianca and Miranda—told over the summer months of three years: 1930, 1951 and 1969. This may sound overly complex, but it is an ingenious and creative way to tell this page-turning story that is not only narratively compelling, but also emotionally searing. The action takes place on Winthrop Island, an exclusive summer enclave for the very wealthy in the Long Island Sound area. There is a natural conflict—usually quite trifling, but sometimes quite dangerous—between the monied families and the year-round islanders who serve them. The book has it all: love, romance, seduction, secrets galore, murder and lots of suspense.Written like an intelligent and exciting soap opera, it will totally consume you. Yes, dinner will be late tonight!

I've made it to 68% somehow, but I haven't really enjoyed it for a few reasons but the main one being I find the jumping between time periods very confusing, esp when you have different generations of characters from the same locale and families doing similar behavior in the different time periods. I am not going to force myself to read anymore, period.

You can't believe the hype of reviews and you can't trust first impressions(sampling). This just wasn't my kind of book. It had a confusing mess of characters and jumped back and forth in time. I didn't get a feel of the class distinctions and I never grew to care about any of the characters. This book was mostly a formulated love story.

I don't believe reviews, for the most part. Often, the really highly rated ones are written by friends of the sellers! I got this book because I saw it on a recommended list somewhere. When I first picked it up, I was TOTALLY confused for the first few chapters because there were too many characters. I liked the writing style, so I started to take notes on the different dates & who was who. By the time I got about 1/3 of the way into the book, I couldn't put it down. I was guessing about the mysteries in it, and the writing style was really great (I'm a former English teacher). When I finished it, I was quite sad, because I was so entranced with the entire story!!!! Love this book, and passing it to my pals.

The story was okay although so transparent. It really made the plot drag especially where a main character learns something shocking to them when it was so apparent from the beginning that that was where the story was headed. The ending just drifted off

I love Beatriz Williams! I've read every book she's written and love them all!This was no different. I love the setting, the time period, the characters, the mystery, etc. I did get a little confused at times on who was who. I went back and re-read parts. In the end it all becomes clear. A list of characters would be helpful to me...I loved the intensity of the Coast Guard scene with Joseph.I look forward to more books from Ms. Willams!! I pre-order them the moment I hear about them!

This was an outstanding story. Nic, a Marine colonel, is deployed to Afghanistan for a special assignment. When she is gravely injured by an explosion, her wife Claire comes to be with her. Can their marriage survive this when Nic pushes her away? This was a great story. The author obviously did a great deal of research for this one. Could feel the grit and heat of the desert as well as the warmth of the love the two main characters shared. Another winner from Isabella! I haven't read Always Faithful yet, so I can attest that this one stands on its own.

While a sequel to Always Faithful, this book stands on its own merits. It starts off with Nic and Claire in love and making plans to marry. After an unexpected assignment to Afghanistan, Nic is fighting for her life. The book goes beyond struggling for physical survival and takes the reader into the emotional realm.It ends a bit melancholy as Nic has an appointment with a new doctor who will decide her fate. Will she be medically retired? However, she had been wondering whether to get out of the Marine Corps. While not the typical HEA ending, the sorrow is a realistic portrayal of a wounded service member and is counterbalanced by the love that Claire shows for Nic. I'm looking forward to another book with these characters.

In the second book featuring Nic and Claire you will be in for a great read although a difficult read. I thought that Isabella did a great job with this book and the second book in my opinion is more touching than the first. It shows the true commitment and love that Nic and Claire have for each other and how they use that to get through some difficult times. This is a wonderful book and I loved reading it!

What can I say? This is another brilliant and beautifully written story about some wonderful characters and their continuing life saga. Isabella is an incredibly talented writer of lesbian fiction. If anyone hasn't read her books, under either name, get them all now and give yourself a treat.

Love the stories of Nic and Claire. This one was more intense than the first. Nic is such a strong character. However I think Claire turned out to be the strongest of the two in this novel. Waiting in patiently for the next book

Awesome continuation of Nic and Claire's story. When war happens, love over comes injuries. This is a great book. I really love the relationship and devotion Nic and Claire have for each other. Can't wait for part 3. Awesome job Isabella. Looking for more of your work.

Isabella continues to give her readers everything they could hope for- Two beautiful women (inside and out), greate chemistry, outstanding research and a fantastic story. Nic and Claire have been through so much and to see their relationship grow and their love for each other tested has me rooting for their happily ever after. I look forward to reading about Nic and Claire and their continuing journey soon. Isabella has proven that with her growth in her writing she will continue to be a force in the writing industry.

Fantastic book. A great followup for Always Faithful. I loved seeing how Nic and Claire continue to grow, and handle the challenges that life in the military throws at them. The author did her homework for this story and it shows.
